Like genetic said SMS is the only real alternative.
This.Asking what's the alternative is silly...

Quite so for SMS (GSM Text). These problems and moans come from running after these IM services in the first instance.SMS. Does not download any updates what-so-ever.
This.
If none of your contacts use another app it's pointless getting it.
Never found whatsapp to be bloated.
There is no bloat what-so-ever.
OP is doing something wrong.
IF there is an alternative which can communicate with Whatsapp with lower resource usage great. After stopping whatapps the battery lasts about 3 days on my Sony with the S3 it lasts about 3 as well.

The whatsapp for the Symbian OS was small so it was for the samsung OS however for the android it is so much larger and the frequent updates with the battery abuse!
The Whatsapp was downloaded from the appstore.
Asking what's the alternative is silly...ask rather what all the people on your contact list uses and you'll soon realise that the size of the application and it's updates are quite irrelevant.
Personally don't find it very bloated and there's nothing wrong with regular updates.
