:wtf:
we must be using different whatsapps

On android it's 20MB, version 2.12.xxx.

How many times do you download yours?

Asking what's the alternative is silly...ask rather what all the people on your contact list uses and you'll soon realise that the size of the application and it's updates are quite irrelevant.

Personally don't find it very bloated and there's nothing wrong with regular updates.

Like genetic said SMS is the only real alternative.

Telegram is good with proper desktop support and available on all devices. Pity so few people use it.

Telegram. More secure as well.

My android version is 42mb version 2.12.367.
The frequend updates of about 19mb and the battery usage.
The old days of the Nokia Symbian the size was about 12mb

SMS. Does not download any updates what-so-ever.
Quite so for SMS (GSM Text). These problems and moans come from running after these IM services in the first instance.

This.
If none of your contacts use another app it's pointless getting it.
Never found whatsapp to be bloated.

IF there is an alternative which can communicate with Whatsapp with lower resource usage great. After stopping whatapps the battery lasts about 3 days on my Sony with the S3 it lasts about 3 as well.

OP is doing something wrong.

The whatsapp for the Symbian OS was small so it was for the samsung OS however for the android it is so much larger and the frequent updates with the battery abuse!
The Whatsapp was downloaded from the appstore.

Any app using a network connection will do that.

Not possible at the moment as whatsapp doesn't have an open API to access their services.

Those were not smartphones.

That is the reason I started to use whatsapp it is now getting larger with the updates wheres for the symbian / samsung os updates used to be only when I checked with the website.
