WhatsApp chat restore on iPhone

So my primary phone dies and I decided to carry on my WhatsApp on a disused iPhone 5. The phone gave me the option to restore my previous chat history of about 3.5GB and at 99% the restoration fails. I've tried on both WiFi and cellular with the same result and the phone has 11.8GB free space and running version 10.3.2. I have an option to skip the restore but if I choose that option what will happen to my old 3.5GB? Will it be overwritten or the phone will have two WhatsApp backups? How is it even possible I can't restore the chat history when I have the space and I am running a fairly recent OS update?

If you are using the same number the backup will probably be erased with the next backup. Can't tell you why it fails though. I did a full restore last week with no problems - though that was from a local backup and not icloud..
