WhatsApp issues on MTN

I am on MTN as the topic name suggest. I am using a Samsung Galaxy Ace running Android 2.3.3 (Gingerbread)

All of my other internet based applications and browsing etc. work 100% fine!

The issue I am having with WhatsApp is like the messages I receive are not being pushed to me. Especially if I have left my cellphone to idle for a few minutes. Someone will send me messages and I just don't get them, or sometimes do only 20+ minutes later. However, if I enter the application they will all come through at once, so I have to actively check for messages all the time because they don't get pushed through. I have checked all of my WhatsApp settings, all of my phone settings especially regarding data and syncing and they are all fine. Nothing had changed on my phone when I started experiencing these issues, since then I have even done a factory restore on my phone, deleted and recreated my WhatsApp account, done numerous reinstalls and tried just about everything I could find on Google as well as this forum and also all of the suggestions on Whatsapp's FAQ page. I am at a loss.

I am thinking it might be MTN, since as soon as I switch to Wireless and use my Router at home (Through Afrihost, on MTN's new network, ironic!) everything runs smoothly and I have no issues at all. My mother's cell as well as my brother in law's exhibit similar behaviour. What else can I try? Is there some fault on the MTN network that I don't know about?

Thanks in advance! :)

I am aware of those connection issues, but those seem to cause a total loss of communication. Not the problems I have been experiencing. And it has been well over a week now, during periods when WhatsAppp themselves reckoned the service was fully functional, and when other person's cellphones with WhatsApp were behaving normally (My girlfriend's for example, but on Vodacom)

EDIT: This thread discribes quite closely what I am encountering: http://forums.crackberry.com/blackb...ng-initial-whatsapp-messages-recently-576318/

Another forum I read had a member who reckoned as soon as he changed service providers his problems disappeared!

I have a HTC Desire S with ICS installed. I am on MTN but haven't had the issue as you describe it. If you say your sync settings are fine and if you did a factory reset, then chances are its a problem with your data connection. Good luck finding it. :)

Well that's the intriguing thing! Three phones exhibiting the same behaviour. Common factor being MTN. And as I mentioned in my orginal post my other data based activities are all fine. Browsing, Facebook messenger, receiving push emails from Gmail etc. Very odd indeed!

Is it possible for MTN to "reset" your connection or SIM? Kind of like an ADSL port reset if that makes any sense?

I’m on MTN but not having any whatsapp problems,
but you can ask them to refresh (not sure what the correct term is) your number on their network -

Yeah I think that might be worth a try! Our of interest, what area are you in? And are you using an Android device? I am in the East Rand, Gauteng.

Would you have any idea by any chance how I would go about doing that?

It's as if my WhatsApp, or data "sleeps" after a certain time period and after that nothing gets pushed through. But it has never done it before recently, and as far as I am aware I haven't changed any settings on my phone either!

EDIT: Called Nashua, since the 808 MTN call center reckoned I needed to call them bacuse that's where my contract actually is. Guy reckoned that there are network issues since the 1st of November affecting MTN, but that it was for the most part affecting blackberry users. He also told me that the only way to "refresh" or reactivate my number on the network was to get a new SIM card :/

I know this is a slightly old topic but I am having the exact same problems.

Messages never deliver when my phone has been idle for awhile.

Also Android (Galaxy S3) and MTN.

Has your issue been resolved?

Background data is on. I do use Droidwall and Whatsapp is in the whitelist.

What happened a few minutes ago is that I will get a message from an hour ago after I ended a call. As the call finished the message came through.

I wonder if it is MTN.

The guy lies! Or maybe MTN does... :erm: The data support desk did it for me one (or said they did), had to just switch the device off/remove the SIM for like 15mins and all was peachy.

This wasn't a whatsapp issue though, I had an Uncapped Lite package that randomly started dropping connection even though there was awesome coverage and activity on the connection at the time of the disconnect.

If you are still battling maybe give the data support people a call (1555, methinks), maybe they overlook the fact that your contract is through Nashua and still help...or at least point you in the right direction.

I have also noticed this on MTN. Messages delay or don't come through whether background data is on or off...

This is getting ridiculous. An hour and a half since it was sent I get a message and that is only because I put my Wi-Fi on.

MTN up to their old tricks again.
