When can Vodacom spy on you?

Vodafone says that government agencies in a small number of countries in which it operates have direct access to its network, which allows the operator to listen in on calls.

Yes.

Like I stated earlier in another post, all calls in South Africa are being recorded, some listened to randomly by a group of hundreds of intelligence officials in Pretoria, and few being monitored full time.

Some clever techs on this forum said this was not possible. I really do not care what they think as they are wrong. They do not have the slightest idea of the technology currently being used to record all calls in SA - also mobile phones. They also have no idea how hectic the monitoring and random checks are...

There is a blanket court order signed into effect decades ago, which is still being used today, allowing the intelligence services access to every phone call made in this country. No services provider may refuse. This court order has nothing to do with RICA or the ECT or any other act. It is linked to an intelligence act that supersedes all other criminal procedure acts.

Still, my advise is that you always be careful of what you say over your phone.

Oh Haai there....

So I really shouldn't say that I have 300kg's of Ampho stashed at home, and I'm just waiting for the right time to plant it and detonate it for maximum political effect then, esp not on a phone call to some random person?

You will be surprised how many people do use it..... especially for those type of purposes. They are not aware that intelligence agencies monitor or do random screening of calls made in this country. This method of intelligence (monitoring phone calls) is 90% the cause of intelligence agents infiltrating such groups or people... and then arresting them.

Why don't you try it and see what happens :)

Remember, they do random screening. So, if they somehow pull your recorded call and hear it, who knows what ride you will be in for.... :) But, be sure all your future calls will be recorded and monitored in real time...

Have tried it many times, and detailed assassination plans for our countries "leaders" over the phone.... oddly enough, I've never been targeted or anything of the sort...

I really do doubt the fact that you would suddenly be 'targeted' by hitmen, accidents, etc...

However, be careful of the sudden new people / friends you will be meeting... all over the show, in your neighbourhood, in shopping centers, at work, along the road, etc. They will only have one thing to work on the next few months or few years.... become friends and get information. And, oh yes, rest assured that, if you did really do this, you will be one of those people in SA whose each and every phone call made will be listened into in real time, and that will include the calls of your friends and family or colleagues you call the most. Be sure that every cent going into your bank account(s) or out will be reported on and detailed information will kept in a file. Your work and home will surely be bugged.

As for privacy, if you have been identified as a target by the intelligence community, you have lost all your rights to privacy and until they are satisfied that you are indeed no risk, they will have countless crates of documents, photographs, video images on you, your movements, your family, friends, and much much more, everything taking a hit at your privacy.

If this is indeed what you are referring to and what you said is true, then most likely this has or is still happening to you without you even knowing it...

not very far-fetched at all, how do you think the ANC is still in power? :P can imagine they record other political parties conversations to use as "intelligence".

simple voice screening against database of keywords makes it easy to "randomly" listen to convos.

It's like sending encrypted email with this in, easy to target ;)

A valid court order applies mainly to the police when they are conducting investigations.

The intelligence division is something totally different. They have a different set of laws and acts. I know for a fact that they have a blanket court order, one that was issued back in the old regime, and still being used today, for their operation in Pretoria. This includes the recording and monitoring of all telephone communications.

They do not need to apply for a court order every time they want to tap into a call.
