When can Vodacom spy on you?

I thought that one would need to get a Section 205 from the court in order to trace/reveal anything out of the ordinary on a mobile handset...
 
People know about those courts... yes they don't know the contents of the judgements etc but the courts are known. We are not good enough to keep something like that hidden, it would leak out

Because I have worked with it before, and very specifically with especially the type of divisions this thread is about. This is a reality and it is happening here in SA as we speak.
 
Yes... and if you had you would have signed all the documents to never talk about it, and since you are you would be breaching those agreements and would not be on this forum anymore.

Lol, I have been telling everyone that it was happening all along. And, that is no secret in any event. Many people on this forum knows where the actual monitoring (in Pretoria) is happening. Some people on this forum even live near by.

Yes, I have signed confidentiality agreements and that the reason why I am not giving out specifics, not here or in other threads as I am not stupid enough to do this. If you think telephone monitoring in SA is bad, man, do I have news for you!......

Have you ever tried to calculate just the storage capacity to do this? Let alone the technical complexity.

That's been my angle from day one... yes you guys store meta data around the call.. that's understandable for a lot of reasons. But recording all the calls in the county, um nope. It's not something we can do and it's definitely not something our wonderful government could even begin to keep quiet

This is what I always ask (actually plead) for on these forums. As seductive as the next conspiracy theory sounds, just spend a minute to think through the logic and logistics of it. If you then still believe it's possible, by all means debate it.

But 99.9% of these conspiracy theories never make it past the first semi-critical view (even though the house's and marine1's of the world desperately want to believe them).

In this case, take the total number of minutes carried by all the mobile operators and work out the storage capacity. Don't even bother with the processing power required. Or the networking requirements.

Let's see what number marine1 and house comes up with.

Make it 5kb/s if you want. How much storage space do you need to keep all call for a short period? Say 3 months?

With all respect Jannie, you are representing Vodacom and understandably you will need to cover for the company denying things such as monitoring. I respect that. How many people will accept their mobile company allowing governments recording their calls?

However, just very strange that your holding company comes out and admits openly that governments are tapping into their networks and recording calls. Besides this, they specifically points out South Africa, but unfortunately cannot provide statistics as they are prevented from doing so by some laws that are publicly available and a few that are not.

Unless you, representing Vodacom, will now say your holding company is also involved in Conspiracy Theories and dreaming. I would love to see their reaction to such comment from Vodacom SA.

Over and above this, the compression technologies available to LE's around the world is much better than you think. An hour of recording can be compressed to a 70kb file, even smaller. Do you for any moment think the government will spend only 10k on a facility tasked to record call recordings?

Yeah right, common sense prevails.

Don't ask me, I don't know how many simultaneous calls are running on the system, or their average length, but whether or not blanket call recording is happening now, does not mean the final intention is not to eventually have it.

A 1TB HDD can be got for under R1000 easily. How many 1TB drives can be bought for the price of an Nkandla?

Actually I'm representing common logic. Nothing to do with any specific network operator.

So what number do you get for the storage of all voice call recorded for...

1. 1 Day
2. 1 Month
3 1 Year

...for all networks carrying voice in South Africa. And please don't forget VoIP.

You have all the info, so it's a simple question. Why won't you answer it?
