GOG is a really great platform serving up games, They remove the DRM crap, enhance older games to play on newer systems, support linux (as does Steam) and their pricing is great. Well worth supporting them! Between them and Steam you can't go wrong. I've got more GOG games than Steam games.

I'm growing a little wary of the smaller games though...Steam is already over-run with shovelware so I don't even want to know about the more indie platforms.

Didn't say it was. My point is that everything - including steam - seems overrun by [-]shovelware[/-] indie stuff.

Started with this gawd-awful humble bundle trend. Here is a pack of 6 games of which you only actually want 5...and as the years progressed it turned into progressively less of those 6

At the end of the day the choice is still yours to spend the money or not. I know what you're talking about but if you're selective you can still pick up some good deals. Others will see a $5 deal and go ape buying it even though they will never use it. I reckon some people just collect games and we have a few on this forum, come steam sale they just buy but never actually play.

I think I've enjoyed a lot more of the indie titles than AAA this year. Well, there's obviously more indie released.

In the end, it really is up to your taste and with modern platforms like steam with video, images, queues and curator reviews, we are totally spoilt.
 
I'm still at a loss why these arguments exist. Everyone has their own preference.

Indie games can be awesome. One of the things I like most about Humble Bundle is that you get to discover new games. The games I want in the bundles usually more than justify the price, so anything extra is just a bonus.

You don't have to clog up your Steam account with untested games either thanks to the majority of Humble Bundle games having a DRM-free download option.

Ah ok. I must say though that lately I've been enjoying more indie games than AAA games. Just read a review or two. Will help a lot.
 
The games are expensive and then there is DLC. In the good old days, when you buy a game, it is a complete game. Today games get released halfway through development and we the users, have to download huge patches just to be able to play a game that you paid full price for. Ridiculous.
 
There is in my opinion a huge price gap in the market right now for people who want to play games on a console in their living room. Last generation Nintendo came in at that point with the Wii and they had enormous profits, and then they stuffed it all up with the Wii U. If they'd just kept the price point the same ($250 entry level for the console, $40-50 for the games) they wouldn't be in the situation they are in now.
 
I find it's more the younger crowd (12 - 18) or people with almost zero knowledge of PC's apart from using "Microsoft programs for work" who swear by console gaming. I'm glad I'm at an age (28) where I can appreciate all platforms - but it's damn silly to choose to play the same game I own on a PC with a console who runs the game considerably worse.

"Considerably worse" is a massive overstatement. The difference between them is hardly all that considerable.

So that debunks just about every theory you made regarding age, knowledge and use for purpose.

I'm not sure I see the logic behind this... that's like saying "I specifically bought a Datsun Go for Sunday drives because I drive a brand new Rolls Royce all day for work".

It's not considerable, but it is a fact: you are paying a premium for a slightly worse graphical experience.

No, a car is still a car is still a car.

Consoles and PC's might have similar hardware now, but still quite different experiences.



Actually I'm not paying a premium at all, that's another assumption.



Just because those are the prices on the shelves doesn't mean people actually pay them.



If I pay more than R350 for a game it's a very rare occurrence.
