I dare you to inch your way along for 2 hours in Jhb traffic in a manual 330 with that frikkin' heavy clutch and not get cramps in your leg...

Not in a rush: change at ~1700 rpm.

In a rush: change at ~2500 rpm.

Need to instill buyer's remorse in some hot hatch owners: change at 3500 rpm.

330d torque monster :D

It varies. When slipping the clutch (to get the last erg of acceleration), engine power-band is more important (IMO). There is no time to shift attention to rev counters. You operate by ear and feel (has the engine run-out of grunt?). That’s if you are in a rush. Otherwise I change for fuel conservation reasons. A vacuum gauge helps with this. Cars and bikes.

Do none of you actually pay for your fuel???!!!

Revving the cr@p out of a car is a totally senseless operation, as it only hurts your engine and your wallet in the long run.

I drive a vw polo 1.4 (the one with the 2 round head lights),

I sift @ 2000rpm, seldom go over 2000rpm... (it's a manual, petrol). but, if I'm in a hurry, i really thrash the car @ 3000 rpm... highest ever revs were 5500rpm :p.

Don't some (all?) of the BMWs have a variable red with LEDs? I'm not a BMW fan, so I can't remember offhand, but I recall something about red line at 6,000rpm and as you drive and the car get's warmer, this moves to 8,200rpms or something.

My RunX limits you to 7,200rpm (thereabouts) until warm, before letting you go to 8,100rpm

lol... my polo dies at 5500 rpm :p. But yes, depending on the temperature of the engine, the reline is limited, otherwise you can do epic damage (I know this because my friend has a 1.6L corsa, and from the moment that can starts up, to the moment it's turned off, it's running at 6000rpm (redline), so far the fan belt has gone, one of the valves on one of the cylinders stopped worked (broke), crank shaft bearings packed up... and he's had the car since July!)

I usually drive the car around 3000-5000 when accelerating... For cruising I usually keep it between 2000 and 3000. Dropping lower than that is pointless.

Power band ekes out after 6000 iirc, but I don't go there too often. Heck, can't remember what my redline sits at :/

Jeez, that's a bit rough :/

Less known fact - driving at full open throttle at low RPM is also bad for your car. It puts a lot of strain on the drivetrain.
