Where are the single men?

So that's a no then. In which case you don't have a question which can be answered, because it is based on a movie you haven't watched and don't understand.

I called you out on your hypocrisy and you can't give an answer besides droning whether I have seen a movie or not? Why can't you just give your opinion?

In future if I need your opinion I will ask the man of your house.

You know whatwhat, you're wrong on so many different levels it's impossible to engage with you. You ask me questions about movies you haven't watched, and then when I point out that I can't answer them you somehow feel you're "calling me out" on MY hypocrisy? Good luck with that, but if you don't stop personally attacking me I'm going to RBP you for harassment.

Honey, the only thing you should be doing is taking comprehension classes. All I asked was why you jumped on the feminist bandwagon about the fish gutting, yet can't wait for the 50 Shades movie which is an anti-feminist juggernaut.

You got called out on what you posted, and now you are threatening reporting and personal attacks instead of just answering the question.

Single dude here.

Deconstructing the dissolution of my most recent relationship has certainly given me a serious case of the moody-introspections...

I find myself in a strange position - I'm 34 and due to some rather silly and short sighted decisions as a teenager and young adult I am not at parity with my peers in terms of the material stuff of life. Which makes it hard to interact and meet people of my age without letting my hangups in that regard intrude.

When I moved to Cape Town nearly three years ago, I arrived friendless, having left all my buddies and family behind in my home city. Fine, so I dealt with this by creating an emotional shell and was reasonably well-adjusted about the situation. But then! I got involved with someone and decided if there was to be any chance of a successful relationship, I knew I needed to peel off this armour and expose my soft bits, which I am not good at doing. Alas, things did not work out (pro-tip: don't date your house-mate, the post-relationship scenario gets complicated!). I've also learned that being too nice can scare the **** out of people (wtf).

As we all know the night is dark and full of terrors, and I am frankly tired of going it alone. I'm just not entirely sure how to go about remedying the situation, the state of my life being what it is.

Like most folk, I come with a bit of baggage - A lifetime of serious clinical depression has warped my self-perspective in a way that has been less than helpful to my development over the years, but I've reached a point now where I've realised that as humans go, I'm more than okay. Which comes as no surprise to those who know me, but man can our unhealthy internal dialogues shape our exterior selves in problematic ways.

So here I am, at the cusp of a new year, a year which will and must be different to the last couple, which have found me floundering and without direction. I'm digging deep for the strength to do this, but we are social animals and I have a profound desire to be surrounded and involved with other awesome human beings. I'm not very adept at the socialising thing, so this is a bit of a challenge (and I'm in Cape Town, apparently the most cliquey city in the known universe).

I've no desire to have kids which narrows the pool somewhat. I'm also entirely non-religious, and while it's not the case that I would not date a religious person, I can't help but suspect this would cause problems, which again narrows the pool further.

Even so, there's surely someone out there! A kind, interesting, rational and empathic human, with an amazing taste in music and literature, and an who understands that our brief flitting of consciousness on this ball of rock floating in the ass-end of one galaxy amongst billions, is both utterly and fundamentally meaningless, yet at the same time the most incredible and profound experience we will ever have.

While I'm rambling, anyone in Cape Town who wants to hang out - Let me know!

You know mermaids aren't real, right? :erm:

:p

Of course they are! They're the sirens of the sea, luring men to their deaths with their soulful song. Women are not susceptible to the charms of the mermaid ;)

We did, briefly, I'm up for more excursions, definitely.
Cool, I'm keen. Did no exercise this year due to depression/stress caused by financial issues. That was resolved a few months ago and things are looking up :) I've set out to do 150 km beach hikes over my three week holiday to get fit again, at 92 km today. Feeling a lot fitter which improves my mood tremendously. Want to get back into mountain hiking but prefer with partners especially the more interesting routes. I probably climbed the Table Mountain range 150 times since 2001 but haven't in several years.

All my hiking buddies moved away or got kids. :(

Maybe start a thread ...

One thing about cape Town it's hard as hell to make friends.

Is that not true for most cities though? We have had this discussion on MyBB before iirc, and a lot of people battle to make any social connections when they are older, as most people already have established circles.

What is older? Didn't have that problem in durban.

Lots of people that move to cpt says it's hard to make friends....single or married.

From mid 20s I think? At that age, varsity is done and people are fairly established.

Easier if you have a SO.

It's not difficult making friends in CPT, just difficult getting them to commit to anything.

Pretoria for instance... say you have a braai tomorrow, the entire family will show up with their extended family and friends.

In Cape Town, you're lucky if the fire will even start :p

I don't call them friends....it's people that I know :)

But out of jozi, durban and now cpt.....cpt still my favorite place in SA.

... say all the foreigners... :p

Love CPT too, but nothing beats the mad rush of JHB, and the relative sanity of everyone that side in comparison to here!

I grew up in JHB and studied in PTA, so go back every year for Xmas and new years if work allows. Nothing beats Gauteng this time of year. All the fools run to the coast, so it pretty much leaves everything else in the Highveld open and free.
