MFour does have a good point that I second and although I understand why ISP's want to portion out data by the byte to maximize profit however, having sympathy for that model is akin to sympathizing with current mobile interconnect fees. As with the M&G article and many others, LLU is fundamental to increasing BB penetration. R250 for a pice of copper is unreasonable and currently close to being worth 10GB of int traffic.
University's and large corporations (...ISPs included) have undoubtedly benefited from massive price reductions but the consumer is still getting a very rough ended stick at the moment.

the boycott M-web thing is because of their failure to communicate... not the price. M-web have never been the cheapest ISP around, and I never chose them for that reason (my dad was paying for that at the time :D )

But I guess you would have found that out if you actually read something for a change instead of going off like a kid whose ice cream fell on the hot pavement.

Anybody who knows me, knows I have campaigned just as much as the rest of you, if not more, for better service and lower prices. I have nothing to be sorry for. I still stick to my guns... and sooner or later you will be here munching on your words. It is a given. :D

You are the one munching your words though, you said seacom would deliver good pricing, although you did not specify when so in 12 months or 18 months then yes i will send you some flowers and tell you how good you are at predicting the future :D.

I used vodacom 3g and is absolutely awesome, i get hsdpa almost everywhere and works really well the pricing on the other hand :eek:, although i am sure gary thinks vodacom's pricing is just dandy and will get better in 2 years so no need to moan :p

I also use Vodacom.... and Neotel. Yes, I can afford them too. Very happy with Vodacom. Neotel sucks donkey balls. It only really works as phone line, not much else.

The pricing on those could be better too. But I don't hold out much hope for Wireless connectivity improving. Sorry. It will never be as good as fixed line.

Some people have other things to consider when choosing where to live, like safety, schools, accessibility etc etc etc etc

I don't think ADSL will be no.1 on most people's list of priorities, including mine
 
If i look at my little town - 95% of all the new town complexes are out of ADSL reach anyhow and the 5% that are in range doesn't have ANY telkom infrastructure.

Considering communication and access to information is a BIG part of schooling it should be considered as one of the top reasons.

Yeah ok so we should take our kids to live in any ol' place with any kind of influences cos as long as they have ADSL, it's all good.
Who cares if the roof leaks, or they start doing tik with the kids next door, ADSL ftw!

That's fine. It is your prerogative... but then don't be whining about the prices you have to pay when there is a better alternative out there. You chose to live in an area where you cannot receive ADSL.... Telkom didn't choose that area for you.

That's really overstating it. It is not that hard to find a nice clean and reasonably safe area that does have ADSL. But as we said... it is all about priorities. If it is not a priority for you, then don't sweat it... but also don't complain about it.

You do realise it's a basic human trait to complain right? To never be satisfied? If were all just happy with what we had, we'd still be living in caves swinging clubs around.

I agree that Afrihost's offer is fantastic but I don't believe it's what we were lead to believe Seacom would deliver. Their bandwidth costs are subsidized, not reduced as a result of Seacom. Afrihost & Seacom are two very separate issues.

Afrihost = Fantastic ISP trying to make a difference
Seacom = Big disappointment

Don't take it so personally mate... Unless you're heading up Seacom, it's not your fault.
But you can say what ever you want, when the Seacom talk first started, everyone said 90% reduction in bandwidth cost. Has that happened? No... So I think that means it didn't do as promised right?

You can put me in the whiner camp too.
I don't believe in settling for better, I believe in getting whats fair for everyone.

I don't think it's us "whiners" being pig-headed mate, it's you who fails to see that while a R29 is an offer miles better than we've ever had, it's not what we should be happy to settle with either and it is a LIMITED SUBSIDIZED offer

Like I have said... over and over. It has only been two months since Seacom went live. I never once claimed that you would be seeing fantastic deals within two months... in fact I said it would be around six months or the end of the year.

Sure it is your right to complain... but it is also my right to point out how stupid and whiny you all sound. :D

I wish you guys would Grow up and learn some patience. Are you gonna close the book on Seacom now... or just wait until things start getting better. Well, what choice do you have in the matter. Just wait.

Not one single ISP in South Africa has a Secom based product on the market yet. Not one. So why are we even having this discussion?

I am just as eager as the rest of you... but come on man. Have a bit of common sense and patience. The trend for the first 10 months of this year has been for price reductions across backbone carriage, hosting and consumer bandwidth. ALL of them have seen downward trends so far this year. And yet you guys continue to whine.
 
Seacom has had no effect for the majority of internet users in SA.
The bulk of them are wireless.
