When it comes to broadband access I don't mess around. I made sure I moved to an area that supported ADSL. :) If you really need it or want it... there would be no question. Wireless access will always be more expensive.... or you could switch to Neote or iBurstl! :D

Dont adsl service providers pay dearly for using IPConnect, which they are forced to use? If the loop was unbundled they could, if they had the resources, not use IPConnect. Certainly they have to work the price of IPConnect back into the price per gig.

I'm not sure, I'm asking...

Seacom has not had any effect on prices that we see now. Prices may be lower like afrihost but that has nothing to do with seacom, when i see true uncapped for 500 bucks then things have changed, when i see a gb of bandwidth for 10 bucks then things have changed.

Not that i mind i get loads of bandwidth for cheap but seacom has changed nothing.

I am not whining, i recall you saying seacom will drop prices dramatically and i am a typical negative south african.

Sadly gary you were convinced seacom would change pricing and it has not happened. So i am just pointing out all the okes who thought seacom was our savior are now eating their words.

For me i do not care i download 100gb a month for 470 bucks i got no complaints nor do i need to moan but you did say seacom would bring us lower pricing and it has not happened. You also said something big was happening in October, well bud it is october where is it?

R29.00 a gb just shows how we have been raped, honestly 29 bucks a gb is hardly amazing. Add to the fact it is a once off special and not ongoing for peeps who never took up the special. R29.00 a gb also has nothing to do with seacom so i am still waiting for your seacom to show me the bandwidth.

Why must we move house to get a decent broadband service? Do you propose everyone in SA moves into a neighbourhood that has decent broadband...

and afrihost R29/gb isnt even seacom bandwidthm so seacom plays no part in their cheaper bandwidth...

I don't recall ever using the word "dramatically". I did say Seacom will bring prices down... which is exactly what has happened. Unless R29 per gig is a pipe dream.

you are saying "it will NEVER happen"

and I am saying "it has happened, and it will still happen.. even more than it has"

Let's wait and see some more. I can wait all year if I have to. but
R29 per gig is a nice place to be right now.

That's more than a 50% drop on six months ago.

Pricing may have dropped via afrihost but not because of seacom. The offer of 29 a gb is not the new pricing for bandwidth is it? It is/was a special so no after the special there has been no price decrease. You cannot say because ford has a special on a car that prices have dropped, makes no sense.

You must remember when you move though to check adsl is available, in this country we do have limitations, anything further than 5.5km's from a telkom exchange and you are screwed.

I absolutely agree. Whilst I live in hope things will get substantially better, I have moved onto AfriHost and I am happy with the price I am paying (R29/Gb). 2 thumbs up to them! :)

Effect on pricing

Meyer said that due to the number on cable systems arriving in sub-Saharan Africa, “prices continue to be under tremendous pressure.” Meyer illustrated the point by stating that an STM-1 connection over SAT-3 cost between R6.2 and R6.7 million in 2002, whereas the same connection will cost R970 000 as of 2009.

The cost reduction trend has also filtered through to SAIX. Meyer said that whilst technology advances and new cable systems are driving down costs, it is important to consider actual demand for capacity, which also affects the economy of scale.

So that guy from Telkom goes on record as saying that cost reductions are due to the number of cable systems arriving... including Seacom.

So there you have a guy from Telkom saying that Seacom is affecting their prices.

And here you have Afrihost saying that their savings are partly due to Seacom...

Do you think you will offer this R29 per GB forever?

We will offer this rate forever to anybody who signs up and locks in to this reduced pricing.

Anyone who signs up while the offer is valid will get the GB's included in the package they choose for R29 per GB forever.

We would love to always be able to offer this to all new clients into the future but the truth is we probably will not be able to unless a whole bunch of factors work together:

Some of these factors are:

* Our new offer causes a massive upheaval in the ADSL market and all service providers start offering lower prices. This will in turn put pressure on Telkom to decrease their wholesale prices.
* There are real savings realised from Seacom and this decreases our per GB cost.
* As all of our clients move more GB's our per GB rate we pay will come down.

Our guess is that we will remove this offer as soon as we hit our original "marketing" budget. So we suggest that if you'd like to take advantage of this R29 per GB per month offer you sign up and lock into the price sooner rather than later.

to be fair, 5.5km isnt a telkom limitation, but a limitation of the ADSL standard...

no matter where you are in the world, if you want ADSL you must be less than 5.5km from DSLAM
 
Yea but in other countries i am sure there are tons of dslams compared to us.

Gary so afrihost is in fact using seacom bandwidth then? Why would they remove the offer though, why could they not keep it at 29/gb for good?

No, not yet. He is only saying that they are counting on the Seacom bandwidth helping them to keep it at that cost. It will probably go up some and then come down again when the Seacom bandwidth feeds into the IS backbone. The point is... that they are taking the Seacom bandwidth into account when setting pricing... and they are counting on it to drive prices down.

As for the other guy... Yes, Telkom is saying that Seacom is already affecting prices, and they are actively strategising to counter that.
