Where to test new handsets on MTN

Hi folks

Trying to choose between Tytn, E70 and p990i for a pending contract upgrade. I find however that it is impossible to get a good sense of handsets from the dummy versions on display in the stores. Does anyone know of a service provider shop where one can actually try out each phone in the shop (when eventually available) and get a feel for the OS, responsiveness, ease of one-handed use etc.

A dummy phone is a dummy phone ... i dont think you will find anyone cell store willing to whip open the packaging and power up a device for a test drive ..

It's a great idea ~

The practicality of having a live unit at every dealer and service centre isn't that good but I hear you guys

Maybe MTN should make it the handset manufacture's problem

ive taken a couple of escalations to that effect, but you are right, i wasnt able to help them. this should be made a manufacturer step on.

I mean imagine how productive it would be if you could use a live demo of the phone you want to buy before you buy it in order to decide what to go for?

I smell a spanner thrown in the works ... Anyways it would be great if an end user could get a feel for the device .

We all agree with you cause theres nothing else we can do about it i guess:)
read the review and i reckon the HTC TyTN would be the best choice of the lot? nice phone there:D

I like the TyTn because it has HSDPA, but if you need make a lot of calls the Nokia's battery life is supposed to be better. The P990i has a lot of fans, but just looking at the dummy the keyboard seems impractical for doing much typing.

I'd still go for the TyTn if it wasn't so darn expensive! Looks like it will be the Nokia for me....
 
Haven't got much experience with the TyTn or P990i, but I CAN tell you that the E70's latest firmware seems to be a bit buggy - not nearly as stable as my 6630 with frequent crashes etc. Its also sometimes pretty sluggish - screen redraws happen slowly, expecially when you flip it open.

While on a call, the switch-to-handsfree soft-button is gone (replaced with Mute?!). You now have to dig down into the options menu for it - extremely irritating if you want to quickly grab a call while driving.

Also, good luck in finding a pouch for it :)

But all-in-all, I think its a great little device + most of my gripes would likely be solved by a future firmware update...

Hands on a handset

That would be nice. I think there has been numerous threads about choosing the right handset.

My kids currently have samsung E340E flip-phone. The problem is that when they on MXit and close the phone the application terminates too.

My question is now for the Nokia 6125 flip-phone. I would like to get this phone for them on upgrades but I am unable to establish if the Nokia will also close an application when closing the phone?

A walk-in technical center; say at 14ave would be great where you can talk to real gruru's

I've seen that Cellucity in PE have an option where you can rent a phone for 3 days for I think R150 and see if you like it, they're Vodacom but doesn't really matter if you're just trying the phone. Not ideal to have to pay for it I know but seems to be the only option.
