Which ADSL WiFi router/modem

I am looking at buying an ADSL modem/router which also supports 802.11g. So far I have looked at the SMC 7804WBRA, Billion 7100G, D-Link G604T and Netgear DG834GUK. The price range is about R1050-R1400.

My current AMDtek 802.11b access point works well, but slows down a bit through brick walls. I would like to upgrade to 'g', have a better signal strength and have an effective ADSL modem and router as well.

Which of the above devices works best in your opinion?

An alternative is to keep the AMDtek access point and add a cheap ADSL modem/router.

Can't speak for the rest of em but my SMC 7804 has been great. I researched it a while back and had good reviews picked it up from Lightedge. Wifi + ADSL + Notebook = Comfy wumpfy, now all I need is my deckchair and bar fridge within reaching distance

wamatt, how much was the smc 7804? If it's cheaper than getting adsl router + wifi access point separate then I might get one. I think about R1000 would be my limit though.

I got a Netgear DG834G, unpluged the Marconi USB modem and the Netgear ME102, turned off the routers DHCP, setup the Network address and was up and running in 30 min's.
Not sure if it handles 802.11g but 3 of my wifi cards are 802.11g and connected instantly (I will have look if they switched down to 11b mode next time I go to the office).

Think I paid about R1400 (dealer price) but that was about a year ago... must be around R1000. I say go for the combo if you can, keeps it neat.

I purchased the Linksys WAG54G (Wireless) at Uniterm direct after thorough investigation on this forum. Cost R895.

Am not sure whether it meets all your requirements.

The Netgear is g compliant, and will is also compatible with b cards. My wyf has a g card and I a b card and we both connect to the router no probs . Our place is pretty small so I cannot comment on the brickwall thing.

Thanks for the feedback y'all. I just remembered I got a Light Edge pricelist so I'll check out the prices on there. Do any of these routers support dynamic dns? I'd like to be able to ssh into my home pc when I'm out and about.

Yes, the Netgear DG834G has native support for dyndns.com, that was my reason for upgrading, I needed remote access and this router allows for Dynamic DNS and a DMZ configuration.

I've been running the 7100G from Billion in my SOHO for about three months now, I've got three users connecting with B and G clients and three users on ethernet. It's G & B compatible, it's got a good indoor range (brick penetration), DDNS, Virtual server, good security, etc....

I don't really figit with it everyday to try new and exciting things as I need a stable connection, but I can say this, the 7100G is very stable, it just sits there in the corner quietly going about its business.

It's all working!

Placed my order for ADSL 192 on 25 Feb and had it installed this morning (15 Mar). Quickly fetched a Netgear DG834GTUK and upgraded my Eject account to ADSL which took 30 mins only.

I am now surfing the 'net on my notebook using 801.11b with my wife downloading stuff from Unisa on the desktop. Great!

I have just ordered the free 801.11a/b/g card on the Duxbury promotion and am keenly awaiting to see what the faster card will do. The reason for going for the DG834GTUK was not the promised 108mb (on a 192kb line?), but the promised extended wireless range.

So far so good.....................
