Which SSD

dude you cant explain how a SSD brings your PC to life. I can type on this forum the whole day long, and people will have a moan about the price when they prepared to spend R4000 on a cpu/gpu..

Couldn't have put it better myself.

I would rather get a Intel Celeron + SSD than a Core i5 with mechanical drive. That is how much of a difference it makes to my usual computer usage.

Might just go for that OCZ Vertex then rather than another 6970.

+1 to what Marine said. Also want to find a better price on one :)

guys you can probably save a buck or two if you go with the Adata over the OCZ

Its a damn good drive http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2011/09/22/adata-s511-240gb-review/5

only concern they had was the release of firmware updates. which is a non issue since the review was 22/09 and there have been firmware updates (tweaking performance) since then.

edit : ok nevermind they both the same price. Either drive will do really

And while we are on SSD Friday....

We all know and love solid state drives. If you have 'em, you love 'em; if you don't, you want 'em. Heck, even if you have 'em, you want more. Everyone should get the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of an SSD – including your mother.

How would you even explain to your mother (or anyone who is not quite tech-savvy) exactly is what an SSD and why it's so great? (Or even why she should buy you one for Christmas!)

A classic comment from the bottom :
Mom, think of your pet hamster and how cute it is as it runs on its wheel. Then feed it some crystal meth and watch it turn the wheel so quickly, his whole cage shakes and he shrieks with joy at his new found speed. That's an SSD.

I am so not going to win this contest...

:D

They don't look cheaper?

Now to find where to get one :D
In person hate shopping online

If you do manage to find one in a store you will probably end up paying a few 100 more.

I think I am going to go with either Takealot or Wootware depending on delivery cost.

OCZ has a custom firmware, they have an exclusive type deal with Sandforce. So in theory it should be faster, even if just.

ADATA, Patriot and Corsair probably ship the bog standard Sandforce firmware. Which doesn't make it bad, they are awesome, but at the same price point or R100 less, I would opt for the OCZ instead.

Patriot, OCZ, ADATA and Corsair SATA-6G SSDs available locally are all Sandforce 2 SSDs. The main chip isn't different between them. The difference comes in with the NAND flash type they use. OCZ does however have a exclusive relationship to get their updates from Sandforce first.

Performance wise:
Toggle nand > Synch nand > Asynch nand

You would be hard-pressed to notice the difference in performance however. You need a benchmark to tell the difference (and it isn't huge).

OCZ Agility 3, Patriot Pyro, ADATA S510 = asynchronous NAND
OCZ Vertex 3, ADATA S511, Corsair Force 3 = synchronous NAND
OCZ Vertex 3 MAX IOPS, Patriot Wildfire = toggle NAND

Once again, all of these use the same Sandforce 2 controller, only the type of NAND is different.

nice post, all correct and very well put. You will see that OCZ were able to release their firmware update almost a month sooner than Adata coz of this relationship.

Still, if it was a friday afternoon and wanted it for the weekend... I would grab the Adata for sure if the OCZ was out of stock :)
