Yes folks, it time for another one of those famous Rouxenator threads on his favorite topic - here goes.

It might not be new in any sense (first surfaced in April), and it is not that hyped either, when compared to the opposition, but the Nokia 5800, or Tube as it is know, packs a pretty impressive list of specs. And, as we have learned in the past, spy pics and leaked information on Nokia devices usually are 100% accurate (think 6230i, 6233, N82).

Apart from already gaining a head start on the opposition, the Apple iPhone, by including basic features like MMS and Video recording there is quite a few noteworthy attributes the 5800 will have:
  • A slightly smaller (3.2") but higher resolution (640 x 360) LCD in the widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio.
  • Carl Zeiss optics 3.2megapixel camera (with dual led flash).
  • Symbian S60 5th edition OS with touch input (yes it is made for all those monkey folks that want to touch the screen).
  • Bluetooth that actually works for sending files (and music) as well as A2DP audio support.
  • XpressMusic, which is a more flexible music player than you find in the Apple range of products.

The only difference is that the iPhone is already in production - the 5800 has still to launch. However in SA we have a unique scenario where the iPhone is held up by Vodacom and Nokia products usually appear on shop shelves shortly after they are announced internationally. This is because Nokia is not really one for monopolizing things and binding into to single networks.

So there is a chance that both of these will appear here shortly after each other. The question is which one will you wait for ? Or do you plan to keep the Nokia 5800 as plan B in case your dream phone fails to produce the goods on its honeymoon?

Ofcourse, the mandatory pictures :

interesting. you do have apoint on some level, with the holding randsom issue...

i think it will boil down to interface design - if they can make it fluid like an apple, i'll be a nokia fanboi again in no time!

also, must not be too pricey...but knowing nokia...eish..

LOL... the design was clearly a copy of the iphone.

Well done Nokia. Seems that your favourite company can't design their own touchscreen phone lol

to be fair - if the thing is just a touchscreen, how much different CAN it look?

in the near future all phones will pretty much look the same...just the software will be different..

The 5xxx range (active range) of Nokia phones usually are not that expensive. So price will be a stronghold for the 5800. That, along with the higher quality screen, better camera, working bluetooth and other enhancements will all hang in the balance with the S60 5th edition user interface carrying the most weight.

Currently S60 3rd edition is being made with Feature Pack 2 which does include more "fluid & fruity" menu transitions. Who know how things will look in the 5th edition? Perhaps it will be even better than iFruit ? Maybe that is why the 5800 is still not out yet :p

Rounded edges? Buttons at the bottom?

Come on Keeper. I can make it look different and im a CRAP designer :-)

Looking at the screens you provided I have to say that the font they use looks terrible and the icons are very pixelated.

For instance...

Put the buttons at the top? Make the edges square as with most Nokia phones?

My point is that you can't really say the design can't be changed... because all phones have a screen and buttons and not all of them look the same so why should the touchscreen models?

Nokia Copied Apple. FACT.

did samsung copy nokia as well when they decided to have a keypad at the bottom?

I suppose so yes. Nokia did have the basic design then all the others followed. I remember the first samsung not looking exactly the same but then all phones started to follow the 3310 trend.

did nissan copy toyota when they decided to make the steering wheel round?

what i'm getting at is the buttons are at the bottom cause your speaker needs to be at the top, and by the way you hold a phone. i wouldn't want them to trying to be unique and put the buttons at the top!

hehehe - I would not say you are a crap designer - perhaps more a crapple designer :p

Remember, this device is not in production yet. The hardware might be ready - and it has a screen far superior to the iPhones - but they are still working on the software. So rest assured when it does come out finally it will look a lot better than that to which you have become accustomed to. Remember, this is a Nokia, not a Sagem or Motorola.

Logic says no can't do - your ear goes there. All the phones ever made have the buttons at the bottom. That is not a Nokia or Apple thing - that is a logic thing. Also, Nokia designs spans many shapes and sizes, their is enough square and triangiular phones in there range so they won't square this one.

Oh you wish - but since you have me amused, let me amuse you :
Apple copied Ericsson :

(yeah, those buttons are below the screen)

Also, just to show the uniqueness Nokia has :

(not a touch screen but the wheel/button is below the screen)

And - I know this is cliché - but here goes : Apple copied Xerox :D !

I would MOST DEFINETLY wait for the TUBE. I couldn't CARELESS if it looks like a Apples iFruit. . . .ooops iPhone! The FACT IS that the TUBE WILL be worth the price you pay for it and WILL be more versitile. Oh and about the edges being square, WTF is your point? The NOKIA 3650, 3660,6600, 6630 didnt have square edges at the bottom, the NOKIA N75, N81, N82, N96, N85, N78, 5700xm, 6110-Nav, 6120c, etc. . . DO NOT have square edges, they are rounded, so NO NOKIA DID NOT copy Apple, and if NOKIA did ever copy Apple then Apple should be honoured that another phone manufacturer actualy felt ACTUALY thought they are worth copying. I could say that Apple copyd NOKIA's 7700 with the whole large Touchscreen and no full keypad design, OR i could say Apple copied SE's P900 with that on-screen QWERTY in Flip Off mode. SO FACT ,NOKIA DIDNT COPY APPLE AT ALL. :-)

However ... depending on the iPhones' price ... I will get one and a Nokia flagship touch ... perhaps called the cylinder :P ... when it comes out.

I am a techno geek and proud of it ... I want one in every colour and every size! I have heeps of "Stuff" that I dont use or make up stooped ways to use ... hehehe :) (He who dies with the most toys wins ... and I am in the lead!! ;) )

I see that [apparently] the 5800 is not going to be the touch flagship ... there is [apparently] a "higher-end touchscreen mobile phone based on the S60 Touch OS will be shipped “shortly after” the launch of the Nokia Tube"

See ... http://www.intomobile.com/2008/04/0...00-tube-specs-launch-window-and-live-pic.html

WoW ! and if the 5800 manages to kick the iPhones ass just think what the higher-end model will do.

P.S. Rendier - why so quiet now? Or did a little something called cold hard facts give you a cold shower ? :p Ag it is so cute - Fruity Fanbois are so temperamental, reminds me of my wife.

This is still a iPhone copy cat. Just like the Samsung i900 which is better than this Nokia...

That is the truth!! :)

But then Nokia is the way to go ... I always said ... "Everyone who uses a phone other than Nokia has a Nokia in their draw ... just in case" ... :p
