Nice and smooth.

So I was at Whisky Live last night. Bought the very expensive VIP tickets.

Well, what a rip off and scam those tickets were!

The VIP lounge, with abundant snacks and food, hostesses serving drinks and open bar does not exist at all.

A cubicle with a couch, coffee table and 2 chairs, ONE plate of burnt corn chips and some dodgy dip and a minuscule barcounter with a bottle of Bains on it and a few warm beers. The hostesses were never seen.

The selection of Whiskys were poor and very small. People used the tasting counters as bar counters, to stand and eat their biltong and talk kuk, while you stand behind them and wait for a dram.

Also the endless fiddling with the bullschit tasting cards (shameless pandering to FNB tech I might add), was extremely irritating. I promised myself years ago I'm not going to Whisky Live ever again as it is kuk in general, but I was lured there this time by the so-called VIP promised experience.

Thank god for Wade Bales....going there again as it is an amazing experience at fraction of the price.

It certainly was a much smaller affair than 3-4 years ago. I couldn't believe there was no representation for Laphroaig, Ardbeg or Lagavulin. Bunnahabhain only had the 12 and the 18. Would have been a great time to show off the 2 new NAS expressions they recently started bringing in.

As for your VIP tickets: Never looked worth it to me, but I did tell you so ;)

There were some really good discounts at the NGF store. I walked out with slightly more Kilchoman than I had originally planned for. Poor CC is cowering in my wallet somewhere

As for what was good
Highland Park 10 - Pretty good, but you can taste it' a bit younger and different to the 12, not sure however if people will buy that over the 12 based on how small the price difference is
*Scally Wag 13 - Reminded me a lot of the GlenDronach 12, lots of sherry influence, very enjoyable. Again at the price point I'd probably go with GlenDronach
Rock Oyster NAS - Lovely Islay blend, good price point. Peat & Smoke it's all there without too much craziness. Will pick up a bottle at some stage
*Aberlour - A’bunadh - Been wanting to try this for a while. Sherry Bomb! Lovely stuff. Very similar to the Tamdhu Cask Stregth. Will get a bottle at some stage.
*Three Ships 15yo Pinotage - Actually really liked this (I have a bottle I bought in the live stream hype that's unopened). Planning to open it at a special occasion. If you like some of the wine type finishes in the Kavalan range you should try it.
*Bains Ice Cream - Damn that stuff was amazing, Sugar cone was also really good.
*Kavalan - Podium - Lovely
*Kavalan - Soloist Sherry Cask - Insane Sherry Bomb!
*Kavalan - Soloist Port Cask - Also very intense, perhaps the Concertmaster is a better option.
Kilchoman - Everything is good. Ended my Wade Bales evening at their stand last year and was a great place to finish off again this year.

And then one final moan: Both myself and a friend got shorted some credits on their card system. Best guess is people we double deducting or the backend was having issues.

Which reminds me you can get 5 free tokens in the Whizzky app while at the event.

Happy tasting for those going over the weekend and see you at Wade Bales next!

* Denotes satanboy friendly. No peat bogs were harmed during the making of these whiskies.

Also enjoyed the Aberlour - A’bunadh and the story that went with it.

Find of the day: The Genlivet Nadurra - Peated Whisky Cask Finish. At 62%, the splash of water saved my life...and really enhanced the peat casks.

Yeah the story was really good :)

I've tasted the Nadurra sherried version and that was pretty amazing. Must try the peated one still.

Almost time for world whisky day!

I hope the specials are decent this year

If someone is still looking for decanter sets, there is one on one day only. Today.

Really ??

I will not even use Laphroaig to remove paint from my walls...

:wtf:
I admit the 10 is ... well.... strong.
the QC and 18Yo is good. The 18 is probably the best whisky i've had ... like ever!
but im bias towards most things smoky, peaty. To each their own.

on another note, i cant believe i havent come across this thread before. what a find. local saffers to chat about my fav stuff. excellent :-):D

This is extremely good. I still think the 10yo is better (and cheaper) but this is a worthy Ardbeg.

My Ardbeg collection now consists of:
Ardbeg 10
An Oa
Coryvrekken
Uigedal
Perpetuum
Dark Cove
Kelpie and
Galileo

Excellent. I recently got some An Oa from NGF, then found it at Makro for R750 !!!
what a marriage of sweet and smoky hey!

My love with peat and smoke includes various expressions from Ardbeg, Lagavulin, Talisker, Bowmore, Laphroaig, HP, Springbank, JW Green & Island Green, Big Peat and Smokehead.

I've recently seen the Glenlivet Nadurra (Peated) available online from Makro.

Just opened in this, amazeballs View attachment 494737

I have been lurking around this thread for some time now.Learnt a lot from reading here .
Bought myself a glen livet 12 year old and gentleman's jack .Disappointed in the livet but enjoyed the jack .I also a. A big fan of jack Daniels. can you guys recommend something similar to jack . Had some glenfiddich in the slow lounge and was hugely disappointed because I heard so many good things

Glenfiddich is like JW. great marketing. but a JW Blue is meh compared to the JW Green at less than 1/3 the price.
i've found the whisky taste profile to be sweetish/spicy through to smoky. i like the smoky ones. but everyone has their our tastebuds and likes. enjoy the journey.
