My latest acquisitions that arrived today. I need to stop now, this is becoming an addiction.

Please don't stop, many of us are living vicariously through you. However, you are duty-bound to provide reviews on every purchase that you post up here.

Oh, on that double barrel, you must try it with some fudge. Let to fudge melt first and then take a sip.

That double barrel sounds amazing, Laphroaig and Mortlach wow! It's so easy to justify whisky purchases xD...when you shouldn't. /sigh

damn straight haha :D!

Bottleshop now has the Glen Moray range (various cask finishes and a peated one) at R 329. Not tried any but might interest some people here.

I'm looking at buying some stuff from Bottega Whiskey Club, but there are so many email errors etc on that site, I am a bit hesitant.

Has anybody bought from them successfully before without any hassles?

I've bought from them twice, once in store and the second time I emailed them after receiving their newsletter. I haven't purchased online though. I've been at the shop 4 times for tastings and breakfast, I've met Sav at other tasting events as well. Sav and his staff(Farai and Franca(Sav's sister)) have always given me great service even to the point of sitting down with you to chat.

I've got a bottle of the Laphroaig An Cuan Mor, I'm interested to know you thoughts on it.

Edit, not sure if you've read this about the An Cuan Mor(taken from a blog):
There were a few rumours on the interweb that the mysterious An Cuan Mor is actually 18 year old Laphroaig, finished in European Oak casks, with no mention of the previous contents of said casks. But I wasn't so sure. So I asked the venerable and ever-helpful Dan Woolley, Beam Suntory's national brand ambassador for Australia, who checked with the venerable and ever-helpful John Campbell (yes, the John Campbell), who shared a little golden nugget of information:

Laphroaig An Cuan Mor has been matured in first-fill ex-bourbon casks (from Maker's Mark) for around eight years, followed by a second maturation of a further two years in... wait for it... virgin European oak casks! So there's no mention of the previous contents on the label, because there were no previous contents! I wasn't actually planning on reviewing this one for a couple of weeks yet, but after learning this, I couldn't resist bringing it forward in the line-up.

The use of virgin (a.k.a new / fresh) casks of any sort is still rather unusual in the Scotch world, especially for such a relatively long length of time, as the new oak can overpower many spirits if it's given the chance, giving too much wood influence (known as being over-oaked). The use of virgin European oak casks is even more unusual, largely because of the expense involved, with no previous owners helping to offset some of the cost. But Laphroaig is not just any spirit, and these guys definitely know what they're doing. Getting thirsty now...

They're legit. Owner is a bit of an arrogant fella, but the store is legit

Very interesting indeed. Thanks for that.

I wonder if that's why Arbeg used first fill Black Sea oak casks for Kelpie. May have just been the cheaper option, but sounded really exotic which is great for marketing.

Of the few whiskies that were matured/ finished in virgin oak casks that I've tried, I haven't been disappointed. My favorite Octomore is the 7.4 and that is also Virgin oak cask, actually all x.4 of the Octomores are Virgin oak.

Spoke to Franca at Bottega just now.

They're sold out on that Darkness! I wanted. Really disappointed...

Grabbed the other 2 though.

Are there any 'cheap' whiskies you've enjoyed
That double barrel is completely overpowered by the Laphroaig. Not that it's a bad thing. I just wondered what was the point when I tasted it.

That's a pity. I guess it's a case where two very unique whiskies just don't marry well. Probably would have had a better outcome with Mortlach matured in Laphroaig casks...

Who? Me? I don't know really. What's your definition of a "cheap" Whisky?

I'm pretty sure that DL know what they are doing.

When doing blends, especially like these single cask ones, they don't just hope for the best. These double barrel bottlings have been very successful and are ususally sold out globally. And gets great reviews from consumers and professional, independent reviewers.

Ugh I forgot I even wrote that question. I wanted to ask in general if people had any weirdly good cheap finds. I consider cheap to be in the below R400 range. For example the Private Barrel no. 68 (and apparently they had more bottles because it is back at checkers liquor) is actually a pretty decent spicy whisky (very similar to Paul John Brilliance in profile (oddly) but without that heat). Haven't quite had the guts to pull the trigger on the Irish one they released (no. 108).

I also found that I enjoyed a random bottling of blended whisky a while back called 'Bonnie and Clyde', it was surprisingly adequate but as it was a once off I can't really say much to its credit.

A local Tops has Kilkerran 12, Longrow and Hazelburn 10 all under R700. My wallet is telling me no ;(

I'm sold on Douglas Laing but not everything they do will work for everyone. For example, I tasted Scallywag and didn't really enjoy it but I'm sure for someone it is a hit, like how I really really like The Gauldrons and Big Peat...

Lol, have ordered online twice from Bottega no issues.
They really soirted me out today. When I checked they did not have the Darkness! in stock so I completed my order without it.

Today Severio calls and says he has sourced me another bottle. He recalls my shipment from the courier, orders the Darkness! and adds it to my original shipment.

Then Franca edits the price on the website so I can make an online order, without the shipping costs.

I was amazed to be honest and will be supporting them full blast from now on...

It's a difficult one indeed.

I buy a lot of Whisky and also Rum (mostly from MoM). It's all about personal taste obviously. I drink little enough that I don't "need" cheap Whisky, as it is not about volume/quantity for me.

Obviously I'm not going to drink a R 1 000 bottle of Whisky every weekend.

For me "cheap" is between R 700 and R 1000, I guess. And there is enough in that price range that I really like, within my taste of course ( peat head ).
