They really soirted me out today. When I checked they did not have the Darkness! in stock so I completed my order without it.

Today Severio calls and says he has sourced me another bottle. He recalls my shipment from the courier, orders the Darkness! and adds it to my original shipment.

Then Franca edits the price on the website so I can make an online order, without the shipping costs.

I was amazed to be honest and will be supporting them full blast from now on...
That's awesome service wow! Think I will also support them.

I quite like the Loch lomond range. Single malt should tick your R400 limit for a "cheapie". Their grain whisky is also very good as is the signature. Reserve is a little rough around the edges.

The private barrel 12yo as mentioned is also really good value. Black bottle is good. Oh I almost forgot dewars. I really like both the 12 and 15. Luben swears by bells reserve, but I've yet to taste it. Glen morangie 10 often comes in at R400 on special.

Ultimate cheapie for me remains three ships 5yo. Really good bang for buck.

Hello Learned Folk,

Anyone going to the Wade Bales affair in Durban tonight?

It will be my first time and I am sure I need some pointers, total noob but looking to expand the palate as much as I can.

What should I expect? And would you guys recommend doing distillery by distillery or go straight for the peat I crave so much!?

Any advice would be appreciated or even a meet up if one fancies.

Glenmorangie 10 yr is totally my favourite cheapie - always a pleasure drinking it!

SO bought me the Glenfiddich 15 Yr last week - one of my favourite whiskies!

Taste Whisky you have never drunk before. You may discover a whole new world.

Especially the Irish stuff.

I am a peat head myself, but I leave that for "desert" when I go to a WB event...especially the expensive Octomore beauties...

And please Uber....

My everyday whisky is Three Ships 5yo. Still the best bang for buck whisky in SA.

My other cheapies are Bains, Auchentosan (sp?) American Oak and Clan Denny Speyside or Islay.

For Bourbon it’s Bulleit or Woodford Reserve.

Weekends will most likely see me dipping into an Ardbeg of some sort or a Macallan if I’m in the mood for something other than peat.

Don't be afraid to toss whisky (although there weren't really places to get rid of whisky in the CPT one which was a bit weird...), some of the pours can be overly generous. Pace yourself, drink water, eat and be sure to get an idea of which stand you'd like to try their half-time bell special and get there (for me it was three ships at the CPT one! I also managed to try Bruichladdie's Black Art and the highland park one which was a Bottega Whisky Club single cask bottling).

I would not try every expression or even every stand, you won't make it out alive. Try things you won't be able to buy in a bar or afford. I wish I'd been sensible and tried more Campbeltown whisky, I didn't even though I fell in love with The Gauldrons...

I was quite impressed with Bunnahabhain 12, Auchentoshan Three Wood and Redbreast 12. Certainly expanded my palate!

It is generally recommended to start with the less peaty offerings however an option, if there's something you're really keen to try, try it and then go clear your palate with some food and water.

Chat to the people about the whiskies you may learn some interesting things!

Anyway enjoy you'll have a blast no matter what!

I have a Campbeltown Glen Scotia Double Cask which I got from Checkers Liquor - give it a try, not too expensive and it's a lovely unpeated Campbeltown. :)

It's on my 'To buy list' will probably pick it up in a few months or so! Seen good reviews of the 15 year too and it's actually priced reasonably considering!

The best bang for buck whisky in South Africa is without a doubt, VAT 69. I still can't believe they practically give it away.
