Total noob here checking in for some advice. One of my employees just finished a big project for us. He is a bit of a whisky connoisseur and I would like to get him a nice bottle to say thank you. Something in the 2000 - 2500 range would be good. I know he once said he likes peated whisky, but he likes trying new things.

Any recommendations? Preferably from a reputable online shop.

59.5% that will put hair on your chest!

It's a good dram. 7.1 was a good release. Also take a look an longrow 18.

If you're open to getting two bottles for the same money rather than just 1 there are also quite a few options. Port Charlotte 10yo (on special at whisky brother), Kilchoman loch gorm. Wild about whisky also have the kilchoman px single cask release. Bunnahabhain Cruach Mhona. Ardbeg uigeadail. Ardbeg corryvreckan

Legit retailers:
Norman good fellows
Wild about whisky
Whisky brother
Bottega whiskey (terrible website, but often have unique items in stock like for example lagavulin 8yo, which you can add to the list)

OK so it is not as exciting as I was expecting. Apparently just a special bottling with packaging to celebrate.
Have a pic of the bottle, but was asked not to share it.

Where the green comes in.
Already shared on their socials so it's probably fine.

Not sure I like 'special packaging releases' it's a lot of hype for naught :(. Would have been a great opportunity to test the public reception to a Bains 10yo or something like that.

Kudos for the achievement but meh on celebratory packaging. I agree it would have been way cooler to do a limited bottling of something new.

If they wanted to do the fancy packing then they should have combined the green bottling with the wooden box gift set I saw posted somewhere.

I decided to double up on my chances and got him this:

Scored a R100 voucher as well, so I am a happy camper. I am going to link him to this tread to give his tasting notes.

Thanks for the help @dualmeister and @morkhans

Cant go wrong with the corry I had that and a tasting of the octomore and personally preferred the corry and got a bottle.

When I have some my wife is like what the hell is the smell. "Ai, it be the peat" :)

Had the same from my wife when I pourd a Octomore sample the other day...and we were sitting outside.

She loves the peated stuff and now also Balcones 100 Proof Corn Whiskey....right at the bottle kill. :(

Given these guidelines, I'd suggest:
  • Compass box flaming heart (around R2200~)
  • Compass box No name no 2 (around 2300~)
  • Kavalan Bourbon, Vinho Barrique or Sherry solist cask strength (Sherry is in some Checkers for around R2300~)
  • The whisky brother exclusive Speyburn (R1790)
  • Longrow 18
  • Springbank 18 (mixed reviews but hey it's bound to be good)
I'd avoid:
  • Any Dalmore
  • Any Macallan
  • Any Johnnie Walker
