Y

You're really spoilt for choice in that price range and you're going to get tons of recommendations. I'd suggest you get 2 bottle, here's my pick:
Thanks, will try them (or one of them)

you seem to be a bourbon man, so to test that theory:
- try Buffalo Trace, it's pretty affordable and good quality
- I've been told to also try Jack Daniels Rye, same price range
- Sazerac rye is slightly pricier
- if you want to go local, Three Ships with Oloroso cask finish will give you some of those sweet notes too
Thanks will try it.

I'm trying to figure out what Whisky to try. I've tried a few over my years and nothing ever stands out for me. This is my ratings so far, maybe someone can identify a pattern I should be aiming for?

EDIT - PS I know its an acquired taste too so maybe I just haven't tried one kind long enough.

Jameson: Don't like
Tullamore Dew: Don't like
Knob Creek: Okay-ish.
Chivas Regal 18: Don't like
JW Black: So-So
JW Blue: Don't like
Jack Daniels: Not bad actually, but not great.
Glemorangie: Don't like
Jack Daniels TN Honey: Don't like (This is a liquer, as is Drambuie)

I'm trying to find something that doesn't burn as much as all i seem to get out of Whiskey is the burn.
since I don't drink often for my next bottle i thought of spending up to R1500 to find something that I can get into. My current go-to for a drink every so often is Vodka or Jagermeister.
I'd honestly suggest seeing if you can get some samples of some things. Or try some of the cheaper items at a bar.

You don't seem to like terribly sweet whiskies. So you may find it's actually peated, grassy and even salty profiles that you could go after.

Either way don't waste your money on a whole bottle, try some things and see from there.

So the answer to your question, since it seems you are leaning towards the more savoury, salty side of thngs, let me suggest the following two bottles which would almost fit into your budget (hover for links):
1. Talisker 10
2. Douglas Laing - The Gauldrons

I had some of this in October, will be buying myself another bottle :)

so now that the idiotic ban is lifted again ... any restocking whisky specials out there?
I recon the news caught most of them off guard so they did not have time to source any specials.
Some websites still hadn't even taken their alcohol ban notices down until late in the afternoon :cautious:

Although Norman Goodfellas have extended their Christmas Catalogue Specials with some good prices.

Wow. Lasanta for R499. Teeling Small Batch for R449. Glenlivet 12YO for R425. Some good prices there.

Even this. It's about R259+ at most other places.

What is NGF's delivery like in general?

I have found it pretty quick and reliable. Only had one issue where the box of the whisky I ordered was damaged (it was a gift so wanted it to look nice), I popped them a message and next day they brought me a new one :)

You are not a Whisky drinker...end of story.

Don't force it.

so I bought a Bourbon, but finding it hard to drink :(

Its just not doing it for me. That said I should probably give it more time. I'll also try buying another kind just to compare.

If you're insistent on trying whiskeys - try some single malt Scotch. Your examples are blends and Irish heavy.
Out of that list you posted, I dislike the majority.
