Hey guys,

I need to get someone a bottle of whisky as a gift.

I know they like whisky on occasion so I would like to stay away from my favorite peaty goodies and think a nice Irish one would be a safe bet. Budget of R1.5k.

Currently looking at Bushmills 16. Personally love Bushmills so I'm assuming this would be great too. Any thoughts?
For me, one of the best Irish whiskies is Green Spot, and it comes in at about R700.

Is that from WhiskyBrother, and if so, how did you get hold of it. Last year I ordered some samples, but now it seems that that link is removed from the website. Would like to order some more samples from them
Those are samples from a fellow Whisky enthusiast....we share amongst ourselves all the time.

My record was 52 unopened 50ml samples at on time. I have about 30 ATM with me and another 12 I must still pick up.

Very lucky indeed to be able to share this way. Tasting so many more Whiskies than one could buy...also dodging some ones that I would have been upset if I spent money on them.

@MightyQuin

That Cameronbridge 27 was interesting - I think it spent too long aging, personally, so it missed hitting its sweet spot - would be great to know a more knowledgeable person's opinion.

From the OPs I've tried, the Invergordon is the best by quite a long way. Really good blend at an even better price.

I had both those bottles, but sold them quite recently before tasting them...obviously.

So luckily it seems to have come full circle back to me to taste the Cameronbridge.

It does seem "old" for a grain whisky...grain normally associated with fresh flavors like cut grass and green apples etc.

Quite keen and looking forward to it.

What a strange discovery this evening.

So for those of you who don't know I have been part of this thread in particular for about 3 years now.

My whisky journey started with a glass of lagavulin.

I never "got" whisky but the evening I tried this I knew I stumbled upon something special.

What I didn't realize was this was the start of my serious appreciation for whisky all types as long as it was good.

All the way from vat 69 to the likes of Octomore and ai that peaty Corry from ardbeg including special committee releases etc.

I haven't had 100s of whiskys but I have a fair appreciation for a good one and I try my best to snap up the annual special release 3 ships.

I won't lie I think ardbeg has spoiled us ir me atleast. Lagavulin was the one whisky I haven't tried since that first glass 3 or 4 odd years ago and the one I haven't bought a bottle of. So this evening I was torn between uigadal which I know is amazing had 2 months ago and the lagavulin.

I chose the lagavulin. Chasing that memory of the first time I tried it.

Now don't get me wrong I did enjoy the wee dram, but, I don't think I will get a bottle again. Not being funny it's not "worth it".

Ah ardbeg... why have you destroyed this memory and make such dam fine whisky.

Story over. Good night lads

You are not alone - but go and find a Lagavulin 8 or a SR 12 - you will love it again.

16 got me into whisky too - have not had one in years and bought a bottle a few months back after one of the lockdowns - it is still sitting sealed. Maybe I need to sell it :)

That Ardbeg Uigea is something special.

I am not much of a peat/brine fan but that dram is delicious. I can't believe it is apparently 100+ ppm.

If that had been my first stop in testing Ardbeg I'd probably have blindly bought everything I could. It's so good.

It's always good to re-visit some whiskies a few years later, your palette also evolves and you might find new appreciation/disgust for something you've previously tried.

Here's an an idea of PPM levels of the typical releases from each distillery(Note that Octomore's PPM is pre-distillation) *edit: please note, accuracy not verified*
