A friend picked this up for me in the Zambian duty-free

What was the price you got that at if I may ask? Any good?

Got the same Talisker (Makro special), it's almost done now.

Reading back in the thread, it's interesting how noses get turned up at what, seemingly, is perceived as perhaps 'cheaper' brands. For example, I'm perfectly happy sipping on VAT69 daily (at +/-R100) or, even better, Three Ships 5yr old (R160), which I find hard to beat as a cheaper, peaty whisky. I haven't really found that I hate any of the whisky mentioned in this thread as some people apparently do, but then I'm a whisky drinker not a whisky snob.

What's VAT69 like? Taste? My "daily" is First Watch. Not the grandest but it does just fine as a "daily" :)

I've said on this thread many times, VAT 69 is the best budget blend out of lot.

" :)

He picked it up for $70, a good price until you convert it to rands. I haven't opened it as yet, got a newborn that's keeping us busy. Got a Laphroig PX cask that I want to open before the Hakushu.

Nothing wrong with VAT 69 :)

Thank you lads. I'll be giving it a try. Peaty is something I am partial to.

Let us know what you think of it. Never tried anything Japanese yet. Tried some Taiwanese whisky and really didn't like it. And best wishes with the new born :)

Japanese whisky is nice but the hype's been built up. Check out whiskybrother.co.za, I think they holding a Japanese tasting soon. I've got the 2 open bottles, the Nikki black and Nikki from the barrel, at R500-R700 for 500ml you can spend your money on better whisky. Rather spend R350 to taste 5-6 different whiskies.

Monkey Shoulder is becoming harder to find nowadays. Even though it's shot up R100 to R389 recently.

Three ships bourbon cask finish.

The last of it. Nice way to dip your toes into bourbon flavours.
