I can't understand how that wins awards...it tastes NASTY.
 
Look what I found at Liquor City Claremont!

A while ago they tweeted that they were awaiting their first delivery of Teeling. As I was in the area, I called to enquire, the owner said they're delivering today but he didn't know when. I went there after my meeting and as I was walking out, the delivery guy arrived.

It's not the single malt, but at least it's a start! price is R529

This small batch bottling consists of hand selected casks which are given further maturation in ex-rum barrels imparting extra character and smooth flavour unique to Irish whiskey. By bottling at 46% with no chill filtration completes an Irish whiskey of true character.

TASTING NOTES
NOSE
An inviting nose where vanilla and spice dances with bright sweet notes of Rum.

TASTE
While being very approachable the influence of the rum cask and higher percentage alcohol creates a unique smooth, sweet, slightly woody marriage that sparkles on the tongue.

FINISH
Slightly moorish, sweet spice finish complimented by woody undertones.

What's the alcohol percentage they speak of?

Had a taste last night: really, really good. Not as fruity as the single malt, but very rounded taste and not too sweet.

I thought it would be higher than 46%. I'm generally not a fan of Irish whiskey, to much acetone notes but there Jameson caskmates had changed my mind. I'm quite intrigued by the use of rum casks for the Teeling.

I'd say if you like the Caskmates, you'll probably like the Small Batch. Quite similar in its 'structure', but where the Caskmates is 'stouty', the Teeling is a bit fruity.

I need to expand my knowledge on the rum casked whiskies. I've tried the Balvenie and I was not impressed. Will try the Glenfiddich 21, can remember what that's like since it's been years since I've tried it. Can't think of any other rum cask whiskies.

Bains tastes like bourbon to me. There is something artificial in there that creates a very overpowering smokey bourbon flavor.

Can anyone recommend a Highland Scotch please? I'd like a single malt but Highlands as opposed to Islay, so no heavily peted whisky, also not too sweet please. I'd like to be able to have more than one in an evening.

Around R500 for 750ml budget.
 
Glenfiddich 12 is also a classic (technically Speyside not Highlands)
Glenlivet 12 y.o.
Glen Grant 10 y.o.
Singleton Tailfire
Dimple Haig (not single malt but delicious nonetheless)

Glen grant is nice, think I'll try that Singleton.

Thanks for this, I already have my usual stock: Glenfiddich 12 and Johnnie Walker Back Label but I want to add another.

The Whisky Exchange reports notes of toffee and honeysuckle on the Glenviet, that might be a bit much for me.

I have had the normal Singleton, how does the Tailfire differ?

Generally I prefer peaty whisky but there is a smoothness that I like in Bain's. It's a great achievement given that this is blind tasting.

Try the Glenlivet 12, it's soon to be replaced by a NAS offering and you will be missing out on tasting a whisky that's worth more than the indicated price. Much better than the Glenfiddich 12. The Glen grant 10 year old is also being replaced......by a 12 year old. The Glen grant 10 is the best in the teams, even better than the 16.
