White Girls Only

then explain why 3 years ago, my white friend applied for dentistry, got an 85% average with 5 distinctions in matric, got declined. But my black friend with 2 distinctions got accepted ?

its not hard to get a "varsity bursary" those are on merit, but do me a favour, come to UJ in the beginning of the year, there is a whole centre for bursaries for the previously disadvantaged, with queues for miles ! Can i also not pay fee's cause i was previously disadvantaged ? no!

I don't know why they rejected your white friend.... where they applying for the same degree ? Most likely not.... the point is that they do give to white kids, it might be less but they do still do it. Also they take in to account your financial situation. If you are rich and black you don't need a bursary, if you are poor and white then perhaps you do need one but then you are grouped together with the millions of other poor black people in this country. Obviously your chances of getting one will be less.

Because the one favours whites and the other blacks.

Well that is just silly. That is like telling a gay man that he can't leave his money to a cause that only benefits gay people because that is discriminatory. If this is what he wants to do then what right do we have to tell him no? None that I can see.

I used to be angry at the amount of bursaries I couldn't apply for leading up to and during my university years. It annoyed me especially seeing people of colour who actually had parents that were far richer than mine receiving those bursaries. It was unfair and stupid. In an ideal world there should only be 2 kinds of public bursaries (those provided by the state and not by a private individual) those based on nothing but your financial situation (if you're poor, then we'll help you) and another class based on academic performance (if you did well at school then we'll help you).

Private people should be allowed to leave money for bursaries for any group they wish to leave it for with any conditions they want.

Doesn't matter. These bursaries still exist and they are discriminatory. If these bursaries reserved for a certain race group are allowed to exist why not this particular bursary for white girls? I'm not a white girl but I have no issue with it. This is what the man wanted so leave it at that. Honour his wishes. What makes this form of discrimination unacceptable while the black variety is acceptable?

I wonder the amount of money that is left in that estate?

If it was my grand father I would contest it and take the money for me. Screw the youth youth and money is wasted on them

I get your drift racer.

But, am I wrong in saying that: If the court ruling is upheld, then, the law of this country will in effect be have been modified to the effect that you cannot decide to spend your money in a discriminatory fashion.

Something that is quite damn interesting.

Unless you are vowing for blacks only, thats the point is completely a one sided affair.

Pics or it didn't happen... :p

STANDARD DISCLAIMER: what I say does obviously not apply 100% of the time. Deal with it.

Because white people are more powerful than black people. The impression is that whites have the resources and familial and infrastructural support (ie. sympathetic relatives and place of residence not in a noisy, crime-ridden township) that blacks do not have. This is broadly true.

There is nothing wrong with giving a leg-up to people who really need it. But saying that everybody should be given assistance whether they need it or not makes no economic sense.

Nevertheless, and in order to pre-emptively calm the inevitable flames, the implementation of 'positive discrimination' or whatever you want to call it leaves a LOT to be desired, especially in SA.

Seems reasonable (I would agree with that). I know many DGC alumni. They accept black girls. A black girl was Head Girl in 2007. She now runs the holocaust museum. It makes a good vehicle for researching xenophobia (which she is doing).

What if Sexwhale or some similar BEE tycoon died and left all their money for the betterment of only black children, would the university still have contested the decision ? Also I am willing to bet a lot of people here that are now arguing against this will find a reason why its fair if it was the other way around.

I really hope they do not succeed as this will set an awful precedent.

Black racism is OK, but not white racism ! Everybody knows this, why the arguments ?

It would appear people are either a) unhappy with the status quo or b) attempting to understand the world around them.

Both very positive signs, to my mind.

Its called "fair discrimination"

Just look at the USA where slavery is still blamed for everything and they also have Black only collages etc...

White is still very much alive.

It is a private funded bursary. Did they pay tax on the money origionaly? Yes? Then the government can bugger off.

Private individuals have a right to spend their money as they see fit. I don't agree with it as Merit is what I would prefer to see rewarded but when you start allowing govermental bodies to decide what should be done with your money AFTER tax, it becomes a big problem.

If the point of the bursary is to aid those that lack resources and proper familial structure then those should be the only criteria. Not race.

Exactly. Give a leg-up to those that need it, not exclusively to those that are black. Being a previously disadvantaged individual (PDI) does not automatically make you poor and in need of a bursary and vice versa. In my Honours year I missed out on a rather large bursary despite having not a single mark below 85% while I had to watch those of other race groups around me whose parents had far more money than mine receive the very same bursary I was after with marks in the 60% ranges.

That is not fair when that bursary is coming from the state. If that had have been a private bursary I wouldn't have a problem with it because private citizens can do what they want with their money. When it is the government that is doing it that is when I get angry. This government is supposed to be unbiased and impartial. It is supposed to look out for the best interests of all people regardless of race.

She now runs the holocaust museum.

This sounds grand (PDI advantage) but what it means is that she has charge of the holocaust section. She has a staff of one (herself) and spends her time conducting school groups around (terminally ignorant, white & black). She really shines with the black school groups because she can talk to them in the appropriate language, getting a knotty concept through.

Yes, I agree. However you cannot escape the fact that most previously disadvantaged individuals are black, because the racial stereotyping exercised by the NP in 1948-1989 specifically excluded black people from quality education. There is no getting around the FACT that there is a desperate need to level out the playing fields. Even if the government was adept at doing this, some white folks would lose out.

Seeing as the government sucks at doing this, everyone is losing out. So playing the victim because of your white skin is not going to win you any friends in this matter.
