'Johannesburg - The representation of white South Africans in the professional sector decreased radically between 1994 and 2008, the Solidarity Research Institute (SRI) said on Tuesday.

The number of registrations of white professional engineers decreased by 54.1%, while the number of white attorneys who were admitted between 1999 and 2008 decreased by 36.8%.

By contrast, the number of qualified black South Africans in professions in this sector, including accounting, information technology and the medical industry, rose by between 30% and 507%.

According to SRI head Johan Kruger, the number of black South Africans (Africans, Indians and Coloureds) registered with the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) increased by 248% between 1994 and 2008.

The number of registrations of black professional engineers increased by more than 111% in the same period.

In the information technology industry, the number of black graduates rose by 507.6% between 1996 and 2005.

Furthermore, the number of black medical practitioners increased by more than 30% in three years (between 2007 and 2010) and the number of black attorneys admitted increased by more than 78% between 1999 and 2008.

These findings form part of the SRI's fifth report of the SA Transformation Monitor (SAT Monitor). The SAT Monitor is designed to determine the extent to which black South Africans have benefited from black economic empowerment since the start of democracy in South Africa.

"The number of employees in the professional sector rose considerably between 1994 and 2008, with the representation of black South Africans and especially Africans showing the biggest increase," said Kruger.

"By contrast, the representation of whites in accounting professions, legal professions and engineering decreased sharply, which could probably be attributed to the constant migration of white professionals to other countries," said Kruger.

In addition, white young people are discouraged from pursuing careers in the medical sector, as the selection criteria often promote racial transformation.

"The criteria that are set for white students are more stringent than those for black students," Kruger said. '

Not sure if this has been posted yet.

Im not liking this criteria thing. I mean at least accept people that make the grade fairly.

If this is indeed true, it rather makes a mockery of claims by the BMF that South Africa is not "transforming" enough.

It is also sad to see so many skilled people leaving. However, I cannot fault them because once I've got my degree, I'm intending to leave although it might not be as immediate as I hope for as I might need to gain work experience before any foreign firm hires me. Just need to get a good internship somewhere...

The government needs to grab a whole bunch of matriculants who have reasonably good grades and pay for their education to doctors, engineers, scientists, etc. About 15,000 of each will do... any colour welcome.

That should help fix this country and economy up.

That would be nice but can never see it happening.

True, but school results don't determine university results ;)

In other news:

Medical professionals report that the rate of heart disease, high blood pressure and strokes have increased 247% within the black population since 1994.

They do have the NSFAS that tender for poor students who cannot afford university fees, however they simply cannot provide enough students if they do not develop and promote mother tongue education. The results speak for themselves. Currently the white kid gets his degree, does his 3 years or articles/junior training and takes the overseas trip because he is directly confronted with racism from day one of employment.

Need anymore be said?

Well, we were told in no uncertain terms that the country doesn't need us. Let dem black folk run the show from now on.

Yearly registrations of white professional engineers as a percentage of the total....

1994, it was 91%
2004, it was 71%
2008, it was 71%

Since 1999, there has been a sharp decline in registrations of Black, White, Colored and Asian professional engineers.

But I don't want to leave. I really love SA even with all the shiiite

I remember something like people at UCT get marked or have different pass criteria depending on race? If so do all universities do this?

I go to UCT and I can tell you that is crap :p ... everyone has to get 50 to pass irrespective of what race group you belong to. You might be confused with admissions policy which allows people to get into degrees such as medicine with lower marks than white students but they still need to pass the university exams to go onto the next year.

I do feel, however, that some grade inflation does go on.
