who is actually getting a ps3?

They are those fortunate people in the world who feel the need to drive a Lexus to make them feel complete ... the same when it comes to PC hardware and game consoles :).

My Xbox 360 and 7600GS is good enough ;).

No prob ;) To be frank at the moment Linux on PS3 is just a gimmick, as Fudzy said, cant do anything you cant do on a cheap PC, but maybe one day Sony will give Linux access to all of the PS3's power, then at least you could run some PC games, maybe even run a VM for Windows :p

Indeed ... Cell is an in order CPU unsuited to conventional programs ... it is about as speedy as my 1Ghz Pentuim 3 at running Linux :).

The purpose of allowing Linux onto the PS3 is two fold and neither has anything to do with being useful.

1. Good PR / don't fight the geeks - They'll figure out some way to do it because they want to, so rather build the system to allow them to do it anyway, so they don't have to mod.

2. Sony lost big money in the EU because electronics are taxed differently to Computers. If the PS3 is classified as 'electronics' the taxes are higher than if it's classified as a computer. By providing the ability to run Linux, they're trying to prove it is a PC.

Allowing the PS3 to run Linux is a bad business idea anyway, it happened with the xbox and PS2 as well - people will buy them to build cheap computational clusters and no games.
 
Be careful Scotty, some "1080i" - "HD ready" TV's are only 540p.

Is it an LCD, a Plasma, or a good old fashion Tube? )

LOL relax guys I'm not shaving anything yet. That was a response to him saying that he can basically use his PS3 as a computer to run non-multimedia related apps like word processing. There's no need to get technical about movies and stuff :p Besides there's one other problem - he still needs to get his PS3 ;)
 
I'll be skipping the PS3, Thanks anyways. It's too expensive. I can buy a nice desktop upgrade and a couple of games for the price. And I don't appreciate Sony's attitude.
 
I will buy it for a blue ray player ,and remember there are pc grafix cards that cost the ps3's price. ..all in all i prefer buying a laptop for now.Ps3 can wait till december.I have no rush.
 
I had another epiphany last night. Something else to consider if you're buying the PS3 just for a Blu Ray player - Blu-ray movies are region locked, as will the PS3 be, with no way of disabling it without voiding your warranty.

If you wait for an affordable, stand alone player:
a. It'll be cheaper
b. You can get a multiple format drive that'll support HDDVD, BR and written discs as well
c. Most consumer players have a legitimate way of disabling region codes.
 
I'll stick with my 360 - when we'll be able to get the HD-DVD add-on for it?

I think that would be the safer option, especially if it comes in beneath R2500

EDIT - $187.99 from newegg so its probably going to be about $200 when it gets here through legal channels.
