who is actually getting a ps3?

ya... they clever... computers (parts and full systems) are in a different taxing braket due to the fact that they are becoming essentail iteams now, where as electronic iteams (consoles, mps players, that stuff) are still to be very much a want (for rich folk who can afford the extra tax) so it's taxed a little more... thats why sony came up with the idea of marketing the ps3 as a computer and not so much as a console... and the close the deal the say:" look it can have linux and thus it must be a computer". honestly i think sony couldn't give a **** about us the consumers...
 
Ummm scotty... you're smoking the giggly twig again aren't you?... the PS3 is an entertainment device, and it is "taxed/imported" as such.....

The xbox360 can theoretically run linux to you know... the hardware is as capable of it as the PS3...
 
DUDE WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM? the ps3 CAN support linux... the xbox360 CANNtT unless a later version of the softwear alows it... the ps3 can have livnux at anypoint... thats how sony got it under as a computer. yes it is an entertainment device but it's MORE of a computer so they clame

Have you got any links / references to back up this claim that the PS3 is classed as a computer?
 
I'll back Scotty on that he's right, but he's talking about the EU.

Sony tried it with the PS2 as well, but the EU called their bluff.

While computers have always been exempt from EU import charges, video game consoles have not. Had the court actually ruled that the PS2 is a computer, Sony could have been granted a 50 million Euro (roughly $63 million) rebate on import duties.

By shipping it with exchangeable parts and able to run Linux they're looking to have the PS3 certified as a computer. They have come out and said "to beat the EU taxman" but that's why King Ken was going on and on about it being a computer not just a console.
 
Well the EU is very very far from SA... so its kind of a moot point don't you think?

As for the Linux issue, again as far as i'm concerned.. its a moot point, I'm not about to spend R6k on a machine that won't run linux anywhere nearly as well as a R3k low end pc will...
 
I agree with you toxic B - Sony's trying to pull a fast one but it's too their own disadvantage. If everyone buys PS3's to use as computers, no one would by games, so there'd be to cost recovery.
 
I think to be honest, Sony are shooting themselves in the foot left right and centre with this generation. They are not taking into account that their customer base is considerably more clued up than last generation and simple marketing speak will only get so far nowadays....

Can you be a bit more specific? We all know by now that the PS3 is expensive, but how are they shooting themself in the foot?
 
Retro, no universal friends list, forcing everyone to use blue-ray, having a split mem architecture, the way the PS Network is structured.....
 
I think a lot of the foot shooting has to do with things that were said, as much as things done. things like:

"Next gen doesn't start until we say it does"
"The PS3 is so hot people should get two jobs to afford one"
"**** you Europe you suck!" (Well I'm paraphrasing of sorts here ;) :D)

Then a lot of it was the way they pointed fingers at Microsoft for decisions wrt the 360 launch, and yet in the end, they ended up doing similar or worse. (eg global launch, incomplete BC, two SKU's etc)
 
hmmm... it seems that sony is can liking to be dumb ass's... the funny thing is every one who's spoken on this tread, knows exactly wat they are talking about... the ps3 is good and all but it's just let down by the sloppy work of the software groups and the orignal design group who do the thinking of what must go into the ps3...

Plus of course some of their original design decisions look like they may have been enough to hamstring the machine in some ways.

In fairness you could get an HD TV and a decent 5.1 system for less than R10k.

That Mecer 32" LCD is R5999, and you can get Logitech Z5400's for R1800.

Basicaly R8k all in all.
