Maybe someone can explain to me Blizzard's thinking on this one.

They say that Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 will not have any LAN multiplayer option, because they believe that it will prevent piracy.
If you want to play multiplayer on these titles, you can only do so on Battle.net apparently.

How the heck is that gonna help, please can someone explain the logic on that?

Well, think about it, Pirates like to Lan a lot, and that's where most people share the games etc, so if you take LANing out of the equation, you effectively cut down and delay the piracy ;)

Point taken, but that screws people like me over that prefer LANing with buds than playing online.

Oh well, what the heck, probably can't please everyone.

Furthermore, in the rest of the world (where the majority of gamers dwell), internet is fast, ping is low, and bandwidth is cheap. So it's not actually that stupid of an idea for Blizzard. Also, if it's only online, then you can accurately control who's playing what etc, just like what Infinity Ward did (only, infinity ward realizes that you have large gaming events which don't have online all the time, so they needed LAN, but you will struggle without an original copy of the game ;)).

It just so happens that our internet in SA sucks sh*tballs, so it's obvious that we would throw our toys out the cot, however, if there's 20 000 people that will buy and play the new StarCraft, then that's like pocket change to Blizzard where they would rack up 1 000 000 sales in the USA alone ;). The thing is, people just buy games because they bored, and when a good game (or an franchise) comes along, they won't care about the sacrifices they will encounter, they will just buy it.

Is it not possible to pirate it and play on a non-Blizzard server or even set up your own for your LAN?

Well that's the case for Warcraft 3. There's a 'pirate' W3 server. However I'm sure Blizzard have significantly improved their piracy mechanisms since then. But I don't under-estimate pirates to find a way to set-up their own server.

Where there's a will, there's a way.

because blizzard don't stay in backwards places like south africa.

You can expect a lan fix for D3 and SC2 within a few days of release...

I do hope so, cause come on playing D2 in single player just isn't the same as LANing with 3 or 4 buds, D3 should be no exception.

Just to clear my point on the first post in this thread that I posted: I don't believe for a second that pirates won't copy and distribute the games just because of a lack of LAN.

Just a hint : It is 'Activision-Blizzard' and the emphasis are on the evil half, Activision.

They did it with Modern Warfare 2, they increased the price even...and guess what? Everyone bought it!

So to be honest, Blizzard [and Activision] can most likely do anything with SC/Diablo and you will buy it no matter what :0

Uhm like the LAN fix we saw for MW2? :) I'm pretty sure Blizzard is using MW2 as test as to how important LAN/Local Hosting really is :) So far it looks pretty bleak for the LAN option.

I'm sure we've all seen how effective world of warcraft has been at preventing piracy :p

Because they trying to get you to move to console (where its harder to pirate) so they make PC games worse then the console versions.

And FYI America and the UK have some big LANs like Our RAGE

Meny game that have Diablo's style of play have been released on console and and Red Alert 3 was also released on console as well, from a economic POV Blizzard would be retarded to not release on consoles

don't be daft. we are talking about diablo 3 and starcraft 2 and their non-lan implementation by blizzard. you just replied for the sake if it after reading something in the lines of "preventing piracy" with geez i think it's devs who make ****ty games for pc players to force them to consoles.

They want some of that internet money

i wouldn't be too surprised if bnet 2 or 3 turns into a fully paying service. let's all not forget what route hellgate ended up with the no lan policy apart from being riddled with bugs...
