Why do people smoke?

The big issue is why do people start. Once you have started, it is an addiction, like others, and it is very hard to stop and is also lekker! That first pull in the morning with a cup of coffee, and you feel the buzz coursing through your veins LOL!

People start "because it's cool" (that's the power of marketing combined with the pathetic 'emasculated' weakness of modern man's will ... seriously guys, grow up, be a man, a real man does not go "ooh tobacco companies tell me what to do and I'll do it" at great expense to himself).

Once they start, they continue smoking because nicotine is not just chemically addictive, but HIGHLY addictive, one of the most addictive drugs on the market (+/- 60 times more addictive than cocaine). Because it's so hard to stop, smokers then "rationalise" their addiction in order to justify it rather than admit they are addicted, e.g. making absurd claims such as that there is an amazing "buzz", or that they "could stop anytime", or that they don't care about dying of lung cancer because "when you gotta go you gotta go" or saying it can't be bad for you "because my granddad smoked till he was 90" blah blah blah - we've all heard all these silly claims before - fact is, when a smoker talks about smoking, you know something dumb is going to come out of his mouth. Let's admit it.

In reality there is a "buzz" initially only when you start smoking, because (as I understand it) nicotine mimics dopamine (neurotransmitter in your brain) which your brain produces naturally; however your brain lowers its dopamine production in response to the excess. This is why new smokers have to start smoking more and more to get the same "buzz". After a while things usually sort of level off at some point, your brain no longer produces enough dopamine naturally, but you no longer know what it feels like to be "normal", so what you perceive as a "buzz" is actually basically a LOW combined with nicotine returning you to NORMAL (for non-smokers). That "buzz" you feel is, roughly speaking, how non-smokers feel naturally, all the time. That's why you feel so crap when you stop smoking or haven't smoked in a while, and if you stop, it takes quite a while for your brain to restore its dopamine production.

Quitting IS possible (difficult, but possible), but to quit smoking takes (1) self-respect, (2) will and (3) self-discipline --- qualities that real men have. If you're still mentally a child, you will not be able to quit.

I think girls are doing the smoking thing more than guys these days. Or, that is just my perception.

Most people get hooked as kids not Adults you klutz. By the time they are "men" or "women" they are totally addicted and nicotine is more addictive than heroin which is why it's so difficult to become an ex-smoker without quitting multiple times Also bear in mind that Government fosters this dependence because they get massive revenues from cigarette taxation.

No, the "being a man" I am referring to is a state of mind you can have equally at 14 or 40. I've met 12-year olds who had it and 60-year olds who didn't. Clearly not all "kids" fall for the marketing or everyone would smoke. (It sort of applies to women too, because it's really about *thinking for yourself*, not about your age or genitalia.) But if you want to take me that literally, then 'whateva'.

Your blaming government is another example of what I'm talking about. No, the government did not make anybody smoke. That's the whole point, individuals should take responsibility for their own actions, and anybody older than 12 can understand this.

People smoke because they are addicted.

People START smoking because its actually nice when you first start. The headrush is just great, very pleasing. Its a form of a high, that eventually gets lost and becomes a "fix" when you smoke too often. After a while you a smoking because you have to, and there is no high, and it doesn't taste good, but it cures your withdrawal symptoms from kicking in.

Even the physical action of hand to mouth movement becomes an addiction. And often people tag certain actions to smoking by repitition. Thinking deeply about something, socializing.. If I don't have a cig and I am surrounded by people, I feel extremely uncomfortable and I dunno what to do with my hands etc. I feel self conscious and less casual.

You know Peder, I am a smoker, and I was actually hoping to contribute to this debate (especially taken the section you posted it in), but all you wish to do is bash the smokers, must be your pet peeve, you seem to have no real interest in understanding the problem, so you can take your "debate" and your superior attitude and smoke it.

'In my day' it was mostly the boys, but as I pointed out, I wasn't speaking completely literally w.r.t. gender --- all the points apply to women too, I guess I just have more of an expectation that men should be men and not boys.

is it really peer pressure or is it a weak will by the person who starts smoking or drinking because their friends do it?

Dude, i asked because i don't understand, Rwenzori started belittling me so i gave him some of it back, i think i understand now, but what bothers me is i can do nothing to change it,

At 14 I have a big swinging dick and I am the Man. Right.:D Hell. I think most people cringe when they think of their mindset back at 14.

Now if you look at Government attitudes in the UK and Ireland today- whole countries are now plastered with ads for Nicorette patches- smoking is banned everywhere and the price of cigarettes is out of reach of kids- remember this didn't happen just because smoking's bad it happened because after milking the cigarette revenues for years, Government suddenly realised that the Healthcare expenditure (National Health) was going through the roof (from all sick smokers- heart disease, strokes, lung problems etc) and any taxes realised on cigarettes were no longer profit because cigarettes ate into their healthcare budget The government banning of smoking was a simple business decision.

Havva Texan and calm down LOL!
:p

but all you wish to do is bash the smokers

I don't see a problem with bashing a weakness ;) ... honestly, am I supposed to be "respectful" of behaviour that is obviously and objectively bad/pointless/harmful/destructive/stupid/dirty/wasteful/deadly etc.? That's upside down ... in a world that makes sense, we reward intelligent behaviour and bash stupid behaviour and that's how it should be. Maybe people do these stupid things *because* everyone panders to it by "respecting" it or trying to "understand" it, or whatever. There IS nothing good about smoking, so bash away I say, let's all openly and unashamedly bash bad things until people get the message. I'm not going to walk as if on eggshells in case I "offend" a smoker. It's not *me* that offends you, it's the fact that smoking is *intrinsically* offensive to yourself, and all you're asking is that the bashers not REMIND you of this fact. The fact remains though, whether or not bashers exist.

like i said in my opening statement before is i might burn my fingers but still like turtle said above if i don't agree then why must i tread on eggshells?

Just because one person doesn't agree now noone agrees, lets start the frog effect all over... thats all the government is about...
