Why do you use/prefer Android vs. iOS?

In my case, it's what I'm used to. Does what I need and always has. When the time comes that it doesn't, I'll consider something else.

Not particularly tied to anything so purely using it due to familiarity and convenience.

A few for me off the top of my head:

1. Cost. Paying R8999 for an iPhone SE (2020 edition) is just madness imo. Way too expensive.
2. 3rd party app stores. I can install F-Droid in 10 seconds and use great apps like Newpipe, Bromite and Frost for Facebook etc.
3. Default apps. Can set default apps for more categories.
4. Lite apps. There's lite apps like Facebook lite etc. Works great and imo much better than their full blown counterparts.
5. Local apps usually come to Android first.

And if the bootloader is open, cooking up your own rom is a delight. No bloatware, spy apps. No advertising. Nothing that irritates one. Just delete the offending apk. As an example just in the last month I have saved 6.9 gigs on advertising that tried to get through from Goofoo.

So many good 3rd party apps out there... So many good alternative apps to the stock ones. No itunes lol

Always liked to tinker and theme my smartphone. Owned a few Samsung's back in the day but nothing that really captivated and I would always revert back to the polish that was an iPhone. Back in late 2016 Jailbreaking scene was all but dead so I decided to trade my iPhone 6s in for a Oneplus 3T. Oneplus was the Android I was looking for cause it is the closest to an iPhone experience you likely to find on Android. In terms of refinement, polish and performance!!

Haven't looked back!!

Onto my 6th Oneplus device, Oneplus 7T Pro and absolutely love it!

There is a big deal made of the hardware/software synergy that exists between iOS and the iPhone. For me, Oxygen OS running on a Oneplus device is as close to that hardware/software synergy you ever likely to get, on an Android based device!

I'm rooted and have a custom rom loaded and about 5 custom launchers that I shuffle between. The experience never gets old or stale. There's always a way to change it up when the yearning to tinker comes knocking.

Custom icon packs, custom fonts, a plethora of widgets, custom roms and launchers, custom camera modules such as the much sought after Gcam app, the scope to play is endless....

Price is also a consideration. I have not paid more than R10k for any of my OP phones. Impossible to replicate this value in an iPhone.

Android works well for tablets - the apple tablet pricing is ridiculous. Basically only use it for travel so a lot more price sensitive. Spending 20-30k there doesn't make sense. Something like Huawei mediapad works much better there

Phone - ifruit for sure. Don't care about price & I just trust it a lot more. Google's business model is hoovering up your data. Apples is not. Couldn't be arsed to attempt to unGoogle a phone & not convinced it's even entirely possible.

My production workflow is too reliant on Apple's ecosystem to migrate away.

I drank the kool-aid because back in the days of Macbook Air being the flagship notebook there was simply no competitor besides Apple themselves (iPad)

Nowadays you can find gems like X1, XPS13, Blade 13, etc. but macOS remains the reason I cannot switch to Windows full time. I simply make more money on macOS.

As for phone, it's synergetic to my workflow and pays for itself so I can justify upgrading regularly.

Then I thought to just dive in and now I'm fully integrated into macOS, iOS, AppleTV and Apple services such as iCloud (which I have issues with since it's a sync service and not a storage service but it works so well I can't justifying moving to Dropbox Business) & I share the 2TB of iCloud + my purchases, Music, AppleTV+ and the other **** with my family.

Cost wise I understand some have issues with it but cost aside Apple makes good products and services, not hardware and software and that is why I use Apple.

iPad isn't R20k-R30k unless you're going for the highest end. I got my iPad 8th gen (I think?) for R5.5k new last year

Interesting, I feel exactly the opposite on the tablet part.
To me, just like smartwatches, Apple dominates these markets hands down due to simply how much attention they're giving these products compared to the throwaways from the Android market we're normally used to.

Absolutely, the Pro Series tablets are very expensive, but with the base model and Air tablets approaching updated specs at their lower prices (from R6000), it's been a far better joy to use day-to-day compared to the Samsung's and Huawei's I'm used to, being phenomenally smooth and updated for 5+ years (as Android counterparts mainly feel like blown up mobile interfaces mostly and are sadly afterthoughts to cash in on certain trends) but even then, these respective companies are starting to catch up albeit at higher end model pricing (and DeX-like features are beginning to flesh out and be seen as really attractive features).

No comment on the phone part though, I pretty much hate all the mainstream options at the moment with iOS giving me only slightly less headaches

Oh yes and my Apple Watch... it never leaves my arm unless it's charging while I shower. My gf even pokes fun about me always wearing it but I really like CardioBot, AutoSleep and Due which don't have Android alternatives

Well I buy what I can afford. Android is available on 100's of different devices with different features, compatible of 100's of peripherals from different manufacturers. From very affordable (Xiaomi) to stupid expensive (Samsung). Apple products is for the rich or those trying to keep up with the rich. Unless you are forced to buy second hand... well... Putting the price tag aside. I am sure iOS works well for Apple devices and if you are happy with the way Apple tells you how you should use their device. It seems to be good quality, but when something goes wrong, expensive to fix or replace and you are at the mercy of Core Group.

So for me personally, there is no reason to use an iOS device. The negatives and cost of it outweighs the positives of their eco$y$tem.

Android is a lot more open to tinkering as the others have said, although I'm using an iPhone temporarily, used android since highschool and it's just been super fun to mess around with. It's A LOT cheaper than shelling out R8k+ each year for the newest iPhone compared to R4k for an android that will last you a while. I will say that I can see the appeal of iPhones and how simple everything is and "it's just works". For the average person, I'd say Apple is easier to use but might not be the better option in some cases.

Nah, morons on upgrade packages purchase any phone brand yearly. Well kept iPhones will, on average, last one officially for at least 6 years compared to the lower value imposed with shorter 2-3 year supported Android handsets, but at least Google is trying their best to push manufactures for their artificial Play Store system upgrades that will make this segment of the argument irrelevant in a few years.

with all the hweuiwah fanbois that don't have google play, it might not lol

Having been heavily invested in both Apple and MS/Android environments, there is very little difference to them.
Apple commands higher prices with better quality and a perceived better product, it really is just perception.
Android suffers from the memories of low cost, underpowered phones not working very well.

In reality both are pretty equal and it comes down to personal preference, there is very little that either company is better at.
Apple have a slight advantage though in updates with all iOS devices getting the updates as soon as they are available internationally.
