Why does my speed differ testing with different devices?

I have a Vodaphone MiFi device and use a 8TA data sim.
As my connection speeds are very erratic I thought I would do some tests.
What I have noticed is this:
Using the SpeedTest android app on my phone (Nexus 4) I get between 49ms and 101ms ping and 9.77 and 4.63 Mbps download speeds.
However, using the forums speed test page on my laptop, it shows ping of 66ms and only 0.4 to 3.07Mbps.

Why are these results so different?

1. Use the same test server.
2. How MiFi device is connected? Wired or wireless?

Trying to get to the same server was an issue but have done so and speeds are similar, thanks.
MiFi is wireless only.

Your mini router is probably only 7.2mbps while your phone is 21mbps. Due to efficiencies in 21mbps hspa+ over 7.2mbps hspa you generally will get a faster speed even if its sub 7.2mbps anyways

Many factors have to be taken into consideration. What's your dBm on your smartphone when you running your test and of your mifi router.. This is just an idea why not wrap your router around tinfoil and see if you notice any change. I did read somewhere on this forum that someone used tinfoil and noticed a huge improvement.
