Why is Blackberry Internet so slow?

Can we maybe get some feedback from the new VC representative regarding the upgrade?
 
If the data connection is fine when tethered it reinforces my oppinion that the problem might well be with bis
 
I phoned the Vodacom call centre again last night to see if they can maybe provide me with an update.
According to the guy I spoke to they have no complaints or known issues with BIS and my problem must be device specific. This is after I told him I tried my sim in another blackberry at Vodacare already and I know of a few people that have the same issue.
Guess I’m just going to have to get rid of the thing. There’s no point in getting emails up to 6 hours after someone sends them.

I don't have a problem with emails. Many times an email is displayed on my Blackberry before it shows in Outlook. The problem is Web browsing, which is 20 to 100 times slower than on a PC from exactly the same position.

I spoke to Blackberry support and opened up a case, i do not know if Jannie was assisting with this but what i do need is the following to be pm`d to me please as per Blackberry`s request.

What configuration under browser do you have goto -menu -options- browser options

Pin numbers of your device

Device firmware

Which browser is in use

Been getting speeds like this all morning.
Avg. Download Speed: 0.0Kbits/s
Max. Download Speed: 0.0Kbits/s

Avg. Upload Speed: 25.62Kbits/s
Max. Upload Speed: 25.62Kbits/s

It is not just the browser that is slow it is everything that access the net ie Facebook, Twitter, BBmaps, Google Maps, Viigo, Google aps etc.
We specifically use a speed test app from Xtrem labs to test our connections. http://www.xtremelabs.com

Give it a day as some members only read the threads in the evenings. It is also more the advance users that picks up issues than the standard user.
 
I am also experiencing appalling speeds on my BB Bold.
 
Speeds on Pearl, EDGE

Down: Max 3.3 kbits/sec
Up: 38 kbits/sec

This was 3PM, in Pretoria East.

Will try tonight again.

Yeah i did a speedtest at about 2am this morning and got 160KB down and 50KB up. Would be nice if i could get that during the day... Most of the time it just times out!

Just did another speedtest - only have GPRS coverage at work but its excellent signal strength. Im currently in sandton on fredman drive. Using the speedtest application:

1.47Kbit/s average down
2.81 Kbits/s max down

6.3 Kbits/s average up
26.69 Kbits/s max up

Are we supposed to be using any specific apn? I just leave mine blank... Im on the Blackberry Talk 100 package.

That's probably means you use the Blackberry BIS services, which uses their own BlackBerry APN...

I think the recent explosion in BlackBerries just basically overwhelmed their (BB's) link - the thing gets congested in the day. Hence the upgrade. But at night, less users, thus more bandwidth.

As most of the internet's activity is download - more people uses the down-link than the up-link. Thus, the download part of the link is more congested and thus slower.

Since we're not even seeing a difference between 3G and EDGE devices, it has nothing to do with VC wireless network, but more so with the backend BB server side.

(Sorry for stating the obvious).

Thanks - I switched to the "internet" apn (though i have no way of knowing if it actually uses internet or is forced onto the blackberry one)

These are my results:

Max down : 3.11Kb/s
Avg down : 3.11 Kb/s

Max up : 38.85 Kb/s
Avg up : 12.6 Kb/s
