Why is Vodacom Blackberry Internet so slow?

Over the weekend my speed was higher than in the week (average 20Kbits/s and higher), images are loading on Viigo and Facebook, this morning back to the below 5Kbits/s. Definitely the trademark of an oversubscribed connection.

Back to horrible speeds today after getting some reasonable results on the weekend.
Based on results posted here its starting to look like a vodacom-only problem. I hope they can sort it out because the BIS service is pretty unusable right now!

My weekend results:

Saturday Jun 27 18:24:09

Connection Type: Carrier
Avg. Download Speed: 226.62Kbits/s
Max. Download Speed: 226.62Kbits/s

Avg. Upload Speed: 51.22Kbits/s
Max. Upload Speed: 61.95Kbits/s

Sunday Jun 28 18:23:23

Connection Type: Carrier
Avg. Download Speed: 32.57Kbits/s
Max. Download Speed: 66.59Kbits/s

Avg. Upload Speed: 48.71Kbits/s
Max. Upload Speed: 67.29Kbits/s

This is allot faster than the previous weekends so I thought something got fixed.
But then today its back to normal and the speed test can't even connect.

Mines has been terrible all month. More and more people are getting BIS. Such a shame I upgraded and renewed last week, might have been worth going to MTN...

@So True:

Did you use the blackberry as a modem on your pc? If so your phone connected through the standard APN and NOT through the BIS server. My connection is also super quick using the apn and not bis. But when you use the apn you are charged for the data you use at standard data rates, which is the whole point behind getting the blackberry internet service in the first place as you dont pay for the data.

@Hugo_ZA
You are right, and I agree that BIS/BES should be used as far as possible to benefit from the flat rate. If you read my post carefully you'll see that I provided two sets of download speeds: using my pc and a Novatel MC950D modem (Vodacom) - 15 seconds for a 1.94 MB file, and then using my Storm (directly, not as a modem) the same file took 150 seconds to download.

I also indicated that using the Storm as a modem I got very acceptable speeds on the Vodacom 3.6 service (Vodacom speedtest 2187 kbps).

I hope this is clear?

MTN must definitely be faster on BIS than Vodacom. This is my speedtest from a few minutes ago with my Bold.

Jun 29 14:56:45

Connection Type: Carrier
Avg. Download Speed: 370.25Kbits/s
Max. Download Speed: 375.51Kbits/s

Avg. Upload Speed: 54.24Kbits/s
Max. Upload Speed: 92.4Kbits/s

@so true

If that's the case, my upgrade in July is going to go to MTN...

Morning Guys

Vodacom is currently in the process of upgrading their links to the BlackBerry infrastructure and testing is scheduled to start in the next couple of weeks. I will provide a update as soon as I have a confirmed date as to when these links will be made available in the production environment."

Let's hope seacom impacts positively on the bis/bes network. Here is my test results on mtn using a bold @ aprox 07:25 this morning; Connection Type: Carrier
Avg. Download Speed: 405.86Kbits/s
Max. Download Speed: 490.53Kbits/s

Avg. Upload Speed: 57.42Kbits/s
Max. Upload Speed: 81.69Kbits/s. Regards,

Thanks VD.

Is this still the same upgrade voda3g was talking about a month ago?

I think it would help allot with customer relations if Vodacom would take some responsibility.
I think I’ve made 6 or so calls to the data call centre each of them lasting 20 to 30 mins.
I was told to take my phone to Vodacare twice because this must be a phone specific issue.
Maybe just tell the call centre guys that there is a problem with blackberry speeds so that they don’t waste people’s time.

Thanks for the update. :)

This is getting out of hand now. I have gone from partial data to no data. Been practically offline the whole day. Vodacom better hope that some one doesnt run off to the ASA about this.

I think we deserve an official response from VC about this since we are paying a premium for a service which at this point aint delivering...

Just think - one day google sync might work for me again . . . . luckily I dont need access to my Google Calendar to know that Saturday I can cancel my Vodacom contract!

For those of you with wifi does using that speed things up?

Same here.
Even when it was working today I was getting 2.2 for downloads using the speedtest.

Pretty shocking.
