So I'm a bit confused...

Say I have an 18-55mm kit lens for my Sony...

Now what would the difference be between that at 28mm and a 28mm wide angle lens???:confused:

both at 28mm should give you the same field of view. A 28mm Wide Angle prime lens will give you much less barrel distortion and a better image quality that a 18-55mm zoom will do at the same setting. But AFAIK in terms of field of view, they should both be roughly identical.

The 28mm wide angle lens is probably for full frame cameras that are not subject to a crop factor. 28mm on your camera, because it uses a smaller sensor than a full frame camera, will be multiplied by about 1.5 (42mm). So your 18-55 is actually ± 27 - 82.5.

18-55 @ 28mm and 28mm wide would be roughly the same though.

But 28 x 1.5 is not very wide, it is regarded as wide on a full frame camera though, where there is no crop factor.

Hmm Ok I think I understand...

Can you tell me if this would be a nice lens to invest in? I have purchased an M-mount adaptor with glass for my M mount 50mm f1.4 so I will be able to use it.

This is the lens: http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/item/18675710/Sigma_28mm_wide_angle_lens_for_Minolta.html

That lens = a 42mm f2.8 after applying crop factor. Your kit lens will be wider, but won't perform as well in lower light conditions. Don't know anything else about that lens.

Hrmm anyone else?

I have done a bit of research elsewhere on the internet and it seems as if it is quite a nice lens.
What I want to know is if I am going to get better image quality out of it than my current Sony kit lens or my other Minolta MD 50mm lens...

28mm is considered wide in full format terms. 18mm is roughly the same field of view on a crop body. Weather or not it will be a nice lens, depends on your shooting. Why don't you put your 18-55 on 28 and see how you like shooting with just that one focal length? I liked my 35mm as an alternative for 50mm although if I would do it again, I'd probably get a 28mm. It's not particularly wide on a crop body.
