WAPA website is the way to go, otherwise, contact me Ziggy@vlocity.co.za I can also point you in the right direction, there are WISP's out there that are extremely good & WAPA is the watchdog and a good neutral place to find out who's best positioned to help you.

Thanx Ziggy...

@onaz, I sent AMOBIA a mail again last night regarding some questions that I have and pending the reply, I think I might go with them...

Edit: Mike replied to my mail and this is the status.
R1k for installation.
I need to go for the 3mbps capped service.
I am 1.88km from the tower.
The equipment stays the property of AMOBIA.
Topups are R49/gig IIRC.

As soon as the wife approved it, I am getting it. :)

Easyweb Internet - contact details 010 001 5200 - We cover the PTA and JHB

Hey,

Looking for any wifi/wimax internet providers in Midrand that has coverage at my home.

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=-25.9...5.971588,28.104937&spn=0.012809,0.026157&z=16

DC Connect have tested and can't help.
Screamer seems to be non existing these days.
I am not able to find any one else on google.

Links to website and prices would help. :)

That is why I went the screamer route. It is month to month and that's it!!! (although I paid the huge once off fee)
The problem is that providers are either so scarce, or unknown, that it makes it difficult when 1 appears not to take a contract.

Only thing I can say is, stay away from contracts as far as anyone can!

How do you find distance to amobia's towers?

When they come do do the test, they test the distance as well and then they sent me a mail.

So that is why they left the wimax equipment at your place. You paid for it and now you can't do anything with it... That is why I prefer the contract route, cause then the equipment stays theirs, except for iburst. :erm:

Ok your sight survey was successful, you do however have a complex
installation so your install fees are as follows:

Basic Install Special Rate: R999
Complex additional cost: R700
TOTAL: R1699 upfront
 greeeeaaat offer :D

Shark she is right, i will make sure i stay away from the contract offers , seems like you stuck with Mweb till then. crap
i am getting the damn thing installed next week.

Well Francois climbed on top of my roof with them Army specialized binoculars "Exaggeration of cause", and just went on scouting mission,
i guess trying to locate a line of sight. after he was done just told me that i am like a km away from the tower of which is located like a couple of blocks away.

A couple of things about these contracts,
1 you always get screwed when the other companies data packages drop in price, you as contract have to pay old prices (in most cases at least)
2, if newer better technology shows up you cannot just move from provider to provider
3, your case where you want something better, you can get it but still have to pay the contract

I'll rather pay upfront a few bucks more and can do "whatever" I want

That's true. it's merely to bind you and 24 months is a long time seriously.

I hear what you say, slayer, but their cost per gig is already competitive... I've been with Iburst for 21 months now and there haven't been anything yet that I wanted to change to... Keep in mind, I only play games online, so download speeds are a plus, not a necessity and they have changed their pricing on cap over the past 21 months and we contract holders did get the new pricing as well. Yes, I have to suffer 3 more months with iburst before I can get AMOBIA, but I am currently talking with them to get my contract changed to a lower package and then I can afford both...

If Iburst had any plans for a speed upgrade + offering another connection type, I would have stayed with them...
