I'm trying to set up a WiFi link between my house and my friend's house as a sort of project. It is only for file sharing and if possible LAN (if that's the right word) Gaming. We have a budget of almost nothing and only:

A Netgear CG834WG Router
http://www.netgear.com/Products/Rou...ssGRouters/CG834WG.aspx?detail=Specifications

and

A Netgear WG311v3 54 Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter
http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/wg311v3.asp

No we're prepared to build satalites and drill poles into our roof etc. But this is the only wireless equipment we have.

There is a direct line of site between the two points. Can it be done?

It is not possible using regular WLAN equipment.
Also, it's not legal either...

Simple.
1. The power output of the router and adapter is not enough for it to be able to connect across such a distance. You could try getting a decent antenna and for yourself and your buddy but it would cost around R1000+ for an antenna.... (and if I'm mistaken you would have to run on 5GHz then... which means another router again)
2. Your wireless networks aren't allowed to reach across roads (or some other horsewallop of that kind).

If there's no road crossing it "should" be legal. No guarantees.
Build antennas? For a 500m link? You would have to have the know how and the stuff to do it with. Even then 500m is quite a lot. Because your power output has to stay below 0.1W...

Can't they have a link in the middle? If they maybe had a neighbour they knew ect.

Would that work?

The maximum range of a decent WLAN is around 40m max, without buildings. With buildings it goes down to around 20m.

check out www.wug.za.net.
Don't know where you're located.

500m should be easy if you have LOS(line-of-sight), but you will need attennas on both roofs at least.

But if it's not legal for him to have a wireless link to his friend over 500m, how is it legal for the wugs to operate??

There is a legal exception for WUGs within which they may operate.

I have a Netgear WG111T and I pick up my WISP's signal 4Km away?:D

That's because they transmit that far. You do not have a receiving power output of 4km, they have a transmit power output of 4km.... :p

Yup, try getting the wireless transmitter to talk back over the 4km's.

I believe it has nothing to do with roads, but property boundaries. I would think the same laws that allow WUGs to operate (non commercial) would make this attempt legal. I have a 500m link running, but with outdoor kit.

Im getting over 500m on some links with standard linksys 54gl routers and their default Aeriel's with Line of sight.
Have you tried? Just put them up and see if you can see one another. If not you can think about getting slightly larger Antennae (R500 or so if you shop around but then you might need weather proof boxes etc which will add to costs.

Oh, I see one of your devices is a PCI wireless card....I dont think so....

It it not illegal as long as you do not provide a service for a profit over the link. As for range its all dependant on the antanna type and where you router is mounted.

Ok so its legal.
We have a Direct line of sight.
Our equipment isn't good enough.

So I should buy 2 good Routers and then I can build an antenna or something?

You're welcome to try, spend the money, its worth it. Unless you plan on being on your roof for the rest of your life.

One of my favourite spots in the world! hmmm, these tiles need a new coat of paint I see.... :D

I have five seperate wireless links on my roof, so I tend to spend a lot of time up here :D
