Hi, so I have an old Dell Inspiron 1525(or something like that) running Ubuntu 12.04.
But I never use it, and now I am thinking, can I make something that can play music from an iPhone(or Android even) and/or iTunes that is on my Macbook all over Wifi.
I just want to use the old laptop, so I can delete Ubuntu and install any other software on it. This project can't use internet/data, I live out in the sticks, and there is no way my 0.10 MBPS will do.
PS: it is only for playing music
PPS: I know very little about technology.

At the moment I am looking into Subsonic.

Thanks
Thinus

Not sure if this is what you are looking for, you can install a media server (like plex) on the linux machine run through the media setup and then stream your content to any device on your wifi network, you just have to install the appropriate players on your apple/android devices/pc

https://plex.tv/
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexapp.android (paid)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bianor.amspersonal (free)
https://itunes.apple.com/za/app/plex/id383457673?mt=8 (paid)
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/imediashare-personal/id710578942?mt=8 (free)

Hi Thinus,

There are various software that is capable of doing this. Have a look at
  • icecast. It streams music permanently, like internet radio does.
  • DLNA - It is a multimedia server that allows you to choose what you want to listen to. Here are a few implementations:

There are more DLNA servers, these two were relatively easy to set up and configure. DLNA is also well supported on mobile devices. Some of the default apps might even be capable of DLNA.

XBMC will accept Airplay content from you iPhone or Mac and play it.
