WiMax pricing comparison

Not the worlds greatest fan of both companies so the cheapest one would be of interest to me. I believe Telkom will have a better a more tested network than Iburst anyway.

is iburst trying to be like telkom?

i think iburst will have wider coverage than telkom ... seeing as telkom only provide wimax in areas that cant get adsl.

Oi - Why would anyone want to go with iBurst with these prices. They are pricing themselves out of the market.

Read: In areas that cable theft is prevalent.

Perhaps because in some areas they are the only service providers.

A general misconception about WiMax is that you can get it everywhere, Telkom only offers ADSL as 'n first choice. You can get WiMax in an area with ADSL upon request. :-)

Quote Kicker (a fellow member):

When you apply for BROADBAND the first option if there is copper and slots at the exchange - they will obvioulsy offer that service - why - becasue the infrastructure is there and it will be the most cost effective and quickest method to use. If there is no copper then the alternative is WIMAX (as long as you can get signal from towers that havethe service near you)

You can like many of us request WIMAX even if there is copper in the area - I can have either ADSL or WIMAX - I chose WIMAX

Why would any one want to compete against those prices? There is clearly no competition there.

If you can get iburst Wimax, where Telkom can't give it to you (incl ADSL), then you have to compare those prices against 3G...

iburst thinks ppl think of them as better than telkom, hence charging a premium. i think not. iburst had so much potential, but just turned in2 another telkom-wannabe within a very short space of time. that - my friends - takes talent...

The other big difference is that iBurst services are completely symmetrical I.E: 512/512 and 1024/1024, so it is targeted more towards businesses that need connectivity for more than internet banking and e-mail.

Why is everyone focusing on the coverage issue? If you can get the service at your home, that's all that matters. And seeing that the bulk of subscribers probably live in suburban Joburg, Cape Town and Durban, the coverage shouldn't be an issue. iBurst are crazy to launch with a service that expensive ... so much for Broadband prices going down ...

How stable is WIMAX in comparison to ADSL? Looks to me like almost the entire Joburg area is covered, which means our area is covered.

They aren't talking about rural coverage or anything, but Telkom's WiMax is only available in a few areas where they cannot/do not have ADSL. You are most likely not covered by them, but then why does it matter if you can get ADSL anyway.

iBurst and Vodacom share the same WiMax network, so iBurst's coverage can be seen on the vodacom coverage maps here:

http://www.vodamap.net/3g/

Just untick 3G/HSDPA and zoom in to see WiMax coverage.

Umm..
Telkom WiMax is fixed WiMax. Its installed on your roof, and you can't move it.

iBurst WiMax... is mobile? or is it also fixed WiMax?

Two completely different things here...

VC/iBurst is 802.16e (so called mobile) but deployed in a fixed fashion. CPE connected to fixed roof-mounted directional grid antenna. For all intents and purposes pretty much the same as Telkom, just using 16e at 2.5 GHz TDD instead of 16d at 3.5 GHz FDD.
