WiMax pricing defended

I keep wondering what Neotel will ask... and what the reaction will be?

All the articles keep saying "Vodacom and iBurst" with almost all the statements relating to the WiMax option. Does this mean that it will be 1 service or will Iburst have a WiMax network and Vodacom have another?

Either way I'm willing to bet that I wont get coverage from either even though I live in Pretoria.

Same network and it looks like the same pricing as well. Vodacom did not officially release pricing yet, but I expect it to be exactly the same as iBurst...

On the topic of wimax.

We have a customer in town that has CLEAR LOS of the local wimax tower..but he is 6km away from footprint edge (which is 16km)

2.4 and 5.8ghz wifi is a flop from this tower (due 2 wisp being a total shark)

Telskommel doesn't even send out a signal tester if you are not in the footprint.

So my problem with wimax is - lets say you are 15.9km from tower with NO line of sight , they'll come out and test - but 22km with 100% LOS - not going to come out.

I have a feeling iburst/vodacom might do the same..

The best effort broadband pricing came under fire from consumers, especially since it is significantly more expensive than Telkom’s WiMax offering. The service is also more expensive that Telkom’s ADSL offerings without the flexibility of selecting your own ISP and many different account types.

Guys don't stress. Just vote with your feet...

iBurst said that it can not disclose how the pricing levels were calculated for WiMax due to confidentiality, but feels that it is not out of line with current market related prices.

That’s the problem right there... Vodacom and Iburst aren't providing any solutions to the high bandwidth costs in this country. They are merely playing off of it to line their own pockets. When will South African companies & businesses understand the American way of thinking of "lower profit margins, higher turnover" rather than "higher profit margins, lower turnover"

Vodacom added that Telkom’s WiMax service is only offered to customers in cases where they have applied for ADSL and it is not available. “Customers are required to have a Telkom line installed before they can subscribe to the service,” said Vodacom.

First off, you do NOT need a telscum line in order to get Wimax. What if there are no lines in your area?

"Sorry sir, you cannot get our wireless service until your wires are installed."

What a pathetic joke. I used to expect more from vodacom.

Secondly, while telscum will do everything in their power to get you to rather install ADSL they will not refuse your business if you insist on Wimax.

Pathetic lies from a company that wants to make their overpriced product seem "better".

WTF?

And here I was holding my breath for Wimax from anyone rather than the beast. Seems like the beast is still the best option :sick::sick:

Am so tired of all these big companies. Every single package, broadband or otherwise, are such rip-offs. You just start to hate them.

When they put out prices this high and think that you will go for them means that basically think that you are stupid.

This is one of the reasons I am glad that icasa chose to license more providers rather than less. We need just one to decide that they actually care about the consumer and to put a consumer option on the table.

It shows that there is still a lack of competition...

The toothless ICASA is only one that needs to be blamed for this, although I also used to expect more from Vodacom.

This kind of blatant lying from a company like Vodacom in a press release just boils my blood, although we do expect iBurst to bend the truth 90 degrees.

Besides that, I get the distinct between-the-lines message of "We know we are ripping you off and we can't justify it. If you don't like it, F off"

A 4Mb line with 10GB can be as low as R 849 btw (from sainet), you could add the analouge line rental to make it R1000.

I don't see how any of the products compete on any level except against diginet. :( It's just sad really, surely they can start cutting prices now.

iBurst and Vodacom are still very expensive and nothing new. They are bringing old story for the price. Nothing less than R500 with uncapped.

One would have hoped that Vodacom would have a positive influence on iBurst, but sadly it seem that Vodacom is becoming more and more like iBurst.

actually when I tried to get Wimax from Telkom I was told that they can only bill me if I have a phone line with them.
This was same time last year, but I could definitely NOT get Wimax without also having a phone line.
not defending Vodacom, but Telkom is no better.
