WiMax provider gaining ground

"We are subbing from a company that has spectrum but is not able to use it at this time".

It's old news that Global WebIntact were "subletting" frequency from Sentech through their directors that are or were part of Sentech's management. My guess is Screamer is just continuing this debatable practice of "getting" frequency from an incumbent whose business is in a total mess and who is unable to roll-out spectrum services. But all hats off to them - the more (hopefully serious) competition for both Telkom and Neotel, the better.

I would also thought that it's pretty logical to be Sentech's spectrum.

As Vodacom and others have been promoting for a long time, the "Use it or Loose it" methodology should be implemented and (in a sense) this is an example of such a policy.

Great!! Now if only the customer service was any better than Neotels (wich is the worst ever) then maybe we could look at it.

Sent my enquiry and like Neotel Nothing... :)

Still waiting for a reply to an enquiry i sent about a month ago..

"We are so confident about our superior service, speeds and latencies that we do not insist on onerous 24-month contracts and all our contracts are on a month to month basis. If we or our network do not perform a customer can cancel.

+1

Yawn... I guess we're going to get lots more of these over the next few months.

Useful brand name - just screaming to be ripped off sometime once they mess up.

OK, so you've spent a lot of money on some neat gear. Where's the marketing? Where's the customer service? Where's the fibre backbone? Where's the peering nationally? What international connectivity do you have? Any voice service?

On the whole, this is probably another nail in WiMAX's coffin in South Africa - break the spectrum up amongst smaller players (even if they're borrowing it, not entirely legally), and fragment the market. I predict that WiMAX is going to continue to be an expensive, second tier technology. Just like Betamax, it's not about performance, it's about who's promoting it. Let's see - iBurst, Telkom, Scream...

Spectrum rights should be regarded as property rights and tradeable as such - this is indeed the kind of thing that should be happening, perhaps, however, a little more transparently ...

I hope Dominic can provide clarity on the rights of an operator to sublet allocated frequency....

sorry, cannot comment but i am sure the question will become a bit of a burning one now.

it is good that someone is making some use of Sentechs frequency. However I am very sceptical regarding their voice service and capability to offer these services at a low price. The equipment costs for the custoemr is just too expensive...even on a 24 month contract.

From their web site:

Our advanced Broadband and phone network has finally been licencsed and we want you to join in the celebrations so we are announcing an unbelievable, never before heard of, offer in SA.

Would YOU trust anyone who claims to be licensed and can't even spell the word?

What we need is real price reductions, screamer is not cheaper then Neotel, they per gig costs are rather high, maybe for a mobile operator its fine but if you want to use fixed line then its not worth it.

It might be worth it to have their package installed in my car so I can make super cheap calls when on the road otherwise I can't see any reason for going to them.

Ok. Tell us why you do not like them? You obviously has an issue with them. (Also forgive my spelling as I am not a native speaker)

I looked at their offering and think it is currently too high. But will have another look after arrival of Seacom. Otherwise I would still like to welcome them, as competition will drive down our current prices.

Well maybe now they will get a decent network going thats not down more than its up in certain areas...
search these forums if you think Im making stuff up.

GWI / Screemer / Dan Salmon

GWI/ Global WebIntact / Screemer are all the same company rebranded. Dan Salmon (owner) and his cronies have been trying this sort of thing for years, and have made nothing of thier business. Their main business is 2 way radio's and he is notorious in the industry.

It is no secret that in order to get going Screamer bought out the previous owners's and network of GWI "lock, stock and tower" and then spent the last 2 years fixing it. It had big problems but thankfully most of this has been rectified. Dan Salmon was also bought out and we certainly don't deal in the 2 way radio business.

I am not sure if you think this is good or bad???

I am afraid that some of the comments are your opinion and I can't comment on those but a to some of the other questions: We started our marketing mid January, we have a fully equipped and staffed help desk, we don't use a fibre backbone to backhaul but have deployed a ring design Microwave backbone, we have all the necessary interconnect and peering contracts in place and our voice service offers some of the cheapest calls locally and internationally.

What we need is real price reductions, screamer is not cheaper then Neotel, they per gig costs are rather high, maybe for a mobile operator its fine but if you want to use fixed line then its not worth it.

We have just reduced our out of bundle broadband price to R0.12 per Mb. In WiMAX terms this is the cheapest you are going to get by a long way.
