Hey all

I would like to ask, I am currently on service pack 2... and I know there is a service pack 3... So I would just like to ask, whether I should install it as well.

Some of my friends says that service pack 3 is useless... but then what is really in service pack 3?

Anyway, some advice would be awesome!

Thanks

When I was using XP, installing SP3 did make a big difference tbh. It just felt more speedy. Plus certain games need it in order to work properly. You could just go the Win7 route though, that kills XP :D

Your friends that say SP3 is useless would most likely be using an unlicenced OS and that is why they don't like SP3.

i've also heard that sp3 speeds up the o/s if you only have sp2....i have both installed, but also installed them one after the other so i can't comment on the difference

I see... So there is a point in installing service pack 3.. Thanks

I am going to install it now.. ^ ^

thanks

lol... nah... just leave your computer unpatched so that it can get lots of viruses and become a spam zombie! :erm:

Seriously... asking if you should patch your Windows is like asking if you should put burglar bars on your house or lock your car doors. Leave them open and see what happens! :D

SP3 is definitely faster than SP2 and contains quite a few critical updates (not sure how regularly you update your copy of XP). Like Gary said, install it immediately. Odd that you haven't installed it yet - it has been out since mid 2008.

The only thing you have to watchout for is if your windows XP installation has installation level drivers running.
i.e. Drivers that you had to install with the windows setup using a floppy.

My upgrade to SP3 broke my RAID configuration, and it is not possible to fix.

Otherwise, the changes made XP feel a little more sluggish, but if you really want to checkout the changes, google is your friend.

Just leave Windows Update on automatic mode, that will sort out most of your problems :D.

i have been on SP3 for yonks now and see that i have plenty updates waiting for me so would it be wise to let my pc update itself at some stage and will it work if i am local only?

That's fine if you are on uncapped. But if you are on any kind of cap, you need to monitor it.

I'm not uncapped and I don't even reach my cap on updates from MSFT, the monthly patch tuesdays arent that that big and neither is SP3 as a stand alone offline installer.

So ... should I put burglar bars on my house?

Since i injected sp3 into my humble netbook i have noticed a huge performance leap.
My service pack 3 update file was 316mb and even using my precious HSDPA bandwidth i found it to be well worth it!

Well I installed service pack 3..

mm.. didn't really see the different, but some games were just running "non-laggingly"

^ ^

Do you guys think that there will be service pack 4? or are they just going to try kill XP and not produce anymore service packs?
