Ever since I installed the free Windows 10, I have been frustrated beyond belief on so many occasions. When it downloads upgrades, it resets my ADSL so that I once struggled for more than a week to get it sorted again (with and without the help of my ISP).
Plus the way it handles PDF's is ridiculous - I have all the software etc etc I need but suddenly I can only see certain PDFs and others I cannot open for love or money. Especially those really important SARS e-filing messages, which are kind of essential.
And I think Edge sucks as a search engine.
Oh and finally I can never find anything - I don't have time to deck around searching for a setting or signing up for every little thing I want to view.

I've always hated having my options chosen for me in matters electronic, and Windows 10 seems to want to rule my world :-(

Install your previous Windows again then. Problem solved.

I personally don't like Windows 10, but I installed it on my 'work' laptop and use it (force myself to use it) but yeah, If I got other PC's etc, Windows 7 is my favourite.

Windows 10 is quite a challenge to learn to use (properly).

The latest build (1511) is much better than the previous one released last year when most of us got the "free upgrade"

There was another major update this week that does cause a few things to go wrong, specifically, the mail and calendar app and the settings regarding opening .pdfs.

What you have to do is work through ALL the settings and customise those for the way you want to work, because the defaults do not suit the way many of us in SA use our PCs.

It is quite a learning curve, but I think in the long run it is worth it.

If you are interested, send me a PM and I will give you a reference to a site that is very helpful, much better than the official MS community anyway.

Also there are a few things you can do to check out what may be wrong/corrupt on your PC. If you want this info send me a PM.

You just press the windows button and type the setting you want. Autocorrect in skype annoying you?

Windows button, type "autocorrect" and click the option.

Edge felt like it was still in beta the last time I tried using it, just use Chrome or FF as you would have on any other version of windows. Or use IE if that's what you prefer. (Again, just windows button, "ie" and its there)

Windows 10 rocks. Its quick, but people cant handle change, so yah, suck it up.

PS. Edge is a browser, not a search engine.

1) How Windows is reseting your ADSL router is a mystery - it has no control over it. If you are using a PPPOE dialup I would suggest letting your router handle that.
2) To fix the PDF issue install Acrobat Reader (if this is your preferred reader) - Right click on a PDF in Windows Explorer and select open with and then click Always open.
3) Edge is the replacement for Internet Explorer and not a search engine (the home page may have a search bar for bing but you can change this to default to Google if you like) - Microsoft has taken the approach that most plugins are evil and thus it doesn't allow much in ways of plugins etc (including silverlight and java etc) however it does this quite well - if you don't like it then install Chrome or Firefox or whatever you prefer and set it as your preferred/default browser. There are a lot of lazy-coded websites that worked great in Internet Explorer because it was less strict on standards which isnt the case with Edge.
4) How is it difficult to find anything if you only need to click the start button or windows key and immediately type what you would like to search for?

Hopefully I helped with 1 or 2 of your annoyances - good luck :)

Option 2 also requires you to set stuff in about:config to get adobe to open up the pdfs in your browser. SARS website actually goes over this in detail. Suprised the guy didnt see it.

Is it a secret site that can't be shared in public?

I have also experienced this issue about Win 10 somehow "reseting" my ADSL router. unfortunately, Telkom is currently doing plenty of work in my area and I cannot say for sure it is win 10 that is the cause of the problem.

I have got into the habit of checking the router before switching on my PC, and rebooting it if I notice that the PPP and ADSL LEDS are off or not behaving as they should be. Then booting the PC.

Yes correct, installing another pdf reader should work, BUT after a major update, it is quite common to find that customisations to use the alternative reader have been reset and then pdfs will be opened in MS Edge instead. At the moment, I have IE set as the default browser, and that prevented this issue after Tuesday's WIN 10 update.

Yes you need to customise Edge settings to suit you, even if you are not using Edge. It removes some of these funnies that happens in the background . BUT note that after an Update many of your customised settings revert back to defaults, so you need to check them again.
Edge does not support Extensions and and add-ins. So if the sites you access require add-ins then you are obliged to use another browser of your choice.

One site I access everyday requires Java and the only browser that works with that site is IE and the only IE available on win 10 is IE 11.

This last update included a change to Adobe Flash player which then affects IE 11. What I have found is that "importing favourites" into your browsers after a windows update is rather problematic. A huge nuisance, but I have found after major updates (such as the one on Tuesday), it is better to start with a clean slate and not import favourites used previously.

Edge is growing on me, It is fast and reliable and works with all but one site I access regularly. It is better than Chrome in my opinion, probably because it works better with WIN 10 than does Chrome. I can confirm that the early version of Edge we all got with the first version of WIN 10 was terrible.

On the last clean install I did, I decided to start from scratch. I made sure I could either download all the sw I use off the Internet or had the original disks and then backed up all my data and email, and then did a clean install of Win 10. So far ( now 3 weeks) I am very pleased with the results even though the process was time consuming and painful.

My offer still stands of a PM for more info.

BTW, one of the major issues I had was the loss of the start menu which also meant for some reason that the "windows key" stopped working.

Does it reset your ethernet or WIFI because it sure as hell can't kill the ADSL on your router. If it's the first then update your ethernet and wifi drivers. Also have a problem with my wifi on Windows 10 but it's because of that POS TP-link wireless n usb adapter and them not releasing drivers for it. Will get a Ubiquity Unify.

The beauty of SARS not complying so standards. Install Adobe reader and set it as default under Settings>System>Default apps.
And I think Edge sucks as a search engine. Bing is their (MS's) search engine and yes I agree both sucks. Hopefully Edge will get better this year but atleast we have Chrome so they can take all the time they need.
Oh and finally I can never find anything - I don't have time to deck around searching for a setting or signing up for every little thing I want to view. I can find anything by opening up start and typing. Only 3 letters gets me what I want everytime.

I've always hated having my options chosen for me in matters electronic, and Windows 10 seems to want to rule my world :-( I find it gets out of the way and is pretty stable. Just sometimes they will spam my notification box with user experience things..
.

I don't see how Windows 10 is hard to use.

Step 1: Push the magnifying glass button on the right of the start menu.
Step 2: Write anything Windows offers from any version of Windows.
Step 3: Click to open said program.
Step 4: Use edge for the last time to download and install a new browser (firefox, Chrome, Opera etc)
Step 5: Make sure you have Downloaded and installed a new browser (firefox, Chrome, Opera etc)
Step 6: If Edge is still being used repeat steps 4-6.

You don't even need to use the start menu what can be easier than that.

Loving windows 10. If i want to find something, il just type it in the searh box and there i go. I stil use the normal desktop mode, so its no problem . I hardly use the metro/tablet view so cant complain

Install Start10 and disable the search bar (Start10 has its own one) and Windows 10 will function like an improved Windows 7. It brings back the Windows 7 start menu.

I used Start8 on Windows 8 from the day it released, and used Start10 from the day Windows 10 released.

Love Windows 10. My sister still works off a Windows 7 laptop and I cringe every time I see it.
10 is faster and prettier by a mile.

Having said that, I had a myriad of issues when first installing it. Admin account wasn't actually working afte rthe upgrade so a full reinstall was needed. My laptop's webcam didn't work until the 1511 build was pushed as well as some touchpad issues.

All these issues are now fixed but damn was it annoying for the first few months.

This guy sums up how I feel quite well on this page.

And this quote from him pretty much sums up why I don't use Windows 10 and have reverted to 7:

"MS has some very talented programmers. They're not very common, but they exist. The problem is that the entire company is completely and totally focused on developing an absurd number of new features and products, giving them completely unrealistic deadlines, and then shipping software on those deadlines no matter how half-assed or buggy it is.

The idea is that everything is serviceable over the internet now, so they can just "fix it later", except they never do. This perpetuates a duct-tape culture that refuses to actually fix problems and instead rewards teams that find ways to work around them. The talented programmers are stuck working on code that, at best, has to deal with multiple badly designed frameworks from other teams, or at worst work on code that is simply scrapped. New features are prioritized over all but the most system-critical bugs, and teams are never given any time to actually focus on improving their code. The only improvements that can happen must be snuck in while implementing new features.

As far as M$ is concerned, all code is ****, and the only thing that matters is if it works well enough to be shown at a demo and shipped. Needless to say, I don't work there anymore."

Install your previous Windows again then. Problem solved.

This ^ feels like the best approach to W10 headaches, particularly if it means reverting back to W7.

Win10 sucks donkey balls. So does 8.

Although 8.1 is a hair's breadth better than 8, it'll be a cold blizzard in hell before I move off 7. While I don't mind change if it is progressive, I do mind being coerced into adopting W10.

I don't see how Windows 10 is hard to use.

...

I was going to say that I agree in that it is as simple as formatting and installing Windows 7. I decided not to, as I would rather just respect your views.
