Windows 10 and Office 2007 Compatibility

Seems to be horrendously expensive to me. Not touching that.

If you don't need Outlook and only plan to use it on 1 PC, just buy Office 2013 Home & Student for R1000. Includes Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Onenote.

Or get Office 365 for half price on Gumtree. I see it there pretty often.

The "free for 1st year" refers to people upgrading from 7/8, they will be able to upgrade for free for the 1st year to Windows 10, after it is launched, for the lifetime of the device, after the 1st year you will need to purchase an upgrade license or a new Windows 10 license if you want to move from 7/8 to 10

I just don't understand why some people think Windows 10 will require payment to continue using after the first year. MS clearly stated that it won't be the case.

What's clear is you are uninformed. Of course no-one is born with this knowledge so one has to get it from the vendor. They've said quite the opposite to what you surmise: Free updates for the life of the device.

We've pretty much had a subscription model (in effect) with services for close to two decades in the large corporate licensing model.
