Windows 10: The Next Chapter

I'm finding the waking up from hibernation tons faster!

One major issue though - I can't get access to my samba shares.

This account is not authorized to login from this station.

Worked before the upgrade.

Update: seems to be a major bug. People all over complaining about the same issue. Can't access shares on samba/windows.

THIS WILL FIX IT!!! : https://social.technet.microsoft.co...ror-with-network?forum=WinPreview2014Feedback

Just remember to add the entry because its not there already :)

Lol no way.

Considering they are moving towards rolling releases I actually wouldn't be surprised at all if the preview updates to retail.

The 1 year release window is not about money, it's about forcing people to upgrade.

Downloaded the x64 and x86 ISO's, and my XPS13 is upgrading from the previous preview.
You guys are getting me amped.

upgrade install from previous version

Then its definitely a bug and you should report it through the Windows Feedback app.

They did change the way that some things are done for networked storage. I can't remember where I saw it, but they are aware of it.

That is what they're working towards, yes, since they intend to continue to stick with the Insider program for the OS on all supported platforms. Sadly, Windows on ARM will be disappearing for the moment which is a massive tragedy because its such a great platform.

I installed Windows 10 Technical Preview with no issues. Just weird that Cortana doesn't work, says it is not available in my region. Is there a way around this??

Change your region to US.

Busy installing the preview on my laptop now.

Absolutely stunning OS, I love working on my computer again!

Windows is back in the game.

Change region to US. Make sure you spend some time setting things up for her so she knows what kind of data she needs to monitor and feed to you.

And get her to call you Chief. This is possibly the only name ever that Cortana should call anyone.

Overall it's a pretty solid update over the last build I tried. The interface looks a lot better, but there is still work to be done. The leaked pics showing more transparency will no doubt add a touch of flair going forward. If there is any major downside for me compared to windows 8.1, it's the lack of placeholder files in onedrive. Being forced to keep all 60 gigs locally on all my devices properly sucks. According to the onedrive blog we'll only get that feature back in a year or so.

^^ That's why I wanted the Live Mesh app to just be updated for OneDrive, since there was a way to do placeholders as well. Bleh. I'll just use OneDrive as an off-site storage space, I won't rely on it for the majority of my folder storage.

Yeah, no placeholders a la Win8/8.1 is my only complaint about Win10. I have nearly 120GB on my personal OneDrive. Work is only 15GB. I've vented heavily on this to Msft, and on various forums.

Placeholders?

On that topic how do you manage stuff that you want on your Onedrive but not stored locally?

Say you have 250gb local storage but a 1TB one drive? And want stuff to stay online only?

Not sure what placeholders are.

If you right click a folder/file, you can select make available online/offline.

You can also set it to have everything to only offline/online. My laptop has everything set to available offline and my del latitude 10"windows tablet to offline only as it only has 64gigs.

Busy installing the preview on my tablet now. Laptop already done this morning.

In Win8/8.1 you simply right-click and select Online Only or Online/Offline. If you select Online Only you still see the file in the local file system (eg in File Explorer) - as a placeholder with that name (there's a file icon, but the full file is online on OneDrive only).

Many people apparently found that confusing. They'd have files online only on OneDrive, and when on a plane with no internet access they'd click on the file to open it, only to find it was not available.

In Win10 the placeholders are gone and you have to select which files/directories you want to sync. Like Dropbox. PITA.

My Windows 10 PC just updated to build 9926.

Is this the latest one that they referred to during the Windows 10 event?

Cortana Unavailable in SA.jpg

Cortana is not playing nicely in TIA.

Yes, 9926 is the latest one.

Cortana is for US region. Just like the Windows Phones.

I like with this update that they've made some UI enhancements. Final version of Windows 10 is going to be awesome imho.
