Windows 10 upgrade path and activation issues

Where did you change that ?

right on start > control panel > region (open) > adminstrative (tab) > change system locale > US

Just remember to set it back after upgrade. I got this from using the media creation tool on a windows 8 pc...

Yes, that one.

And I can't run from USB drive because it does not accept my Win 7 key.

So, complete stalemate. From the idiots at Microsoft.

You don't have run from USB. Once the ISO is made, double-click on it to mount it and run setup. Hopefully the changing region trick works for you. Easier than downloading ESD's and making ISO's...

Thanks.

Used Minitool Partition Wizard to extend the system partition and all went well - Win 10 up and running.

My sister's laptop (Win 8.1) asked for a key (inside Windows), and didn't go through.

I did the USB download (32 and 64 pro), and think her version might not be a Pro (will check tomorrow - properties just say 8.1).

BTW, after fiddling around I tried a Microsoft utility that evaluates the computer for suitability with Windows 10, and it rejected the computer, saying that neither the nVidia Ion 2, nor the Intel GMA 3150 GPU graphics were supported under Windows 10.

I'm not sure whether this played a role in the key rejection.
What app did you use to check the suitability? :) I have already downloaded the iso but I'm afraid of installing it because I don't want my laptop to mess up during the process :) btw is it the " get windows 10" ?

Gone back to windows 8.1

Using an upgraded version of windows (even been reset) is not an option for me. It's either a clean install or its nothing.

Microsoft and MSI need to pull finger so people with Oem product keys built into the bios isn't an issue.

Plenty of unhappy people online regarding this matter.

Both my tablets has Win8.1 OEM keys in the bios and activated fine.

Edit: I see what you mean, havent tried a clean install of Win10 on my tablets but with the upgrade activated the hardware, a clean install should activate fine.
The problem is, with a clean install of Win10, no drivers for anything on the tablet(s) and windows update doesnt find any too. Unless you source the drivers from somewhere. I rather did a clean install of my Win8.1 recovery on both tablets with drivers included and upgraded. Working like a dream now.

Yes, think so, can't remember exactly.

BTW, have now managed to upgrade the notebook. Mostly works, just keep getting an error message about a missing Asus ACPI driver. Have so far not managed to resolve that.

The start message in Windows 10 is still cr@p, will have to get Start8 (or similar).

Start10 is coming out (still in beta) from Stardock.

Error 1076 MS office turned back to trial version and I had this running with a product key for the past 4yrs.
Win 7 pro to win 10
MS Office pro.

Tried repair, inserting key everything but would do +-30% then error 1076.

Went back to 7pro and ignored.

Morning

I have 3 Win8.0 CD's with license key.
I moved on to win 10. What if HD fails. Can you use Win8.0 license key?
Or do you now have to purchase Win10 + key.?

Move on people. Windows 7 was great but we can't hold on to it forever.
Using a Windows 7 start menu is hardly the same as remaining on Windows 7. Start8 was the only reason I was able to enjoy Windows 8 from day one. And now that I've installed Start10 to compare it against the default start menu in Windows 10, I think I'll keep it installed. It's just faster and more practical for my needs.

And it has a button to open the regular start menu anyway should I want to do that. Although that's unlikely because Start10 supports Modern UI apps.

You’ll have to reinstall Windows 8 and upgrade it to Windows 10 again.

I’ve backed up my Windows 10 installation after it was activated and all the drivers were loaded. Should disaster strike it would be easy to restore the computer to a working state.

Wrong, as long as the windows 10 "free" activated he can just install windows 10 on the same devices. Changing too many parts though will result in windows 10 not activating.

But if his original question was about using the windows 8 key and staying on 8, it will still work

Awesome, I thought you cannot install Windows 10 with a Windows 8 product key.
