Windows 10 upgrade path and activation issues

Started my upgrade from 8.1 to 10 this morning, everything went well until the final restart after everything seemingly installed and configured, am however now stuck on a black screen with mouse cursor for the past hour, not sure if one is suppose to wait for something to happen (in case it's still doing something) or if a hard reboot is needed *sigh*

I also had an issue where after logging in at the account screen everything would go black and I only had a cursor. I think I just left it until the screen appeared, after rebooting a few times to no effect. There were other issues too, like app icons and the clock not appearing in the taskbar and not having OneDrive. Installing the Windows 10 AMD video drivers did nothing.

I did a clean install after that and haven't had any further issues.

Sadly I haven't gotten to the account login screen yet, i'm basically one black screen away from that lol

Does anyone know if upgrading a Win7 retail copy will tie the licence to that device going forward? (Sounds like by accepting this 'offer' I'm agreeing to not wipe and reinstall on another device - which the original Win7 Retail licence allowed for.)

Well this is a Windows 10 fail, after googling my problems, it turns out Windows 10 reverts to your onboard display instead of your dedicated display card. All I had to do was connect my hdmi to my onboard and problem solved fml

Trying to upgrade a Windows 7 notebook computer.

Does not accept the key on the bottom of the computer.

Ran a key extract program, shows the same key.

So the legal key for this computer doesn't work.

What now ?

BTW, after fiddling around I tried a Microsoft utility that evaluates the computer for suitability with Windows 10, and it rejected the computer, saying that neither the nVidia Ion 2, nor the Intel GMA 3150 GPU graphics were supported under Windows 10.

I'm not sure whether this played a role in the key rejection.

Ok so windows 10 installs with a generic key... I didn't know that!?

So I did an upgrade from 8.1 to 10 and extracted the key (activated) but at the time I didn't know it was a generic key.

I don't want to go through the whole upgrade process again. I just want a bloody clean install is that too much to ask?

Upgrade done. not going to bother with a "clean install", too much effort...

Any had a slow windows 10 and or start menu not opening on first few startups?

Now second upgrade that w10 is dog slow just after upgrade...

Nah everything seems fine, no real issues apart from having to uninstall/reinstall nvidia drivers and disabling my onboard gfx card.
Also noticed it doesn't startup as fast as 8.1, propably a few seconds longer :p

It's probably installing lots up updates in the bg. Give it a little while. I did three machines for family yesterday and one today. All laptops. All had no issue whatsoever.

Used the downloaded ISO to do an inplace upgrade in all cases. It's really a clean install anyway. Once the Win10 upgrade is done and activated, future installs should activate, including fresh installs on virgin disk. No serial key required.

The previous Win installation is in Windows.old. This can be removed later using the standard built-in cleanup utility (on disk icon, r-click > Properties > Disk Clean-up. Also click 'Clean up system files' and do a scan, then you can clean up previous Windows installation, ie Windows.old).

So after a whole day of struggling, managed to get my NextBook (NXW8QC16G) upgrading to Win10.
Downloaded the ISO from MS this morning (about 3.2ish GB) and used the media creation tool form MS to make usb out of the ISO.

Decided to do clean reset of my tablet with it's recovery to factory defaults. Had to do all updates afterwards under Windows Update and then after noticing the win10 setup keeps failing and 10% and gives "Windows failed to install" not the "something happened error). I noticed that if your internet is active running win10 setup and selecting "Download and install updates.." it fscking downloads the win10 install from MS and doesn't use the ISO. Lost 2+GB this way and it kept failing within install (possible due to a corrupt/incomplete download).

Finally got the install (upgrade) going. Also noticed I can run media creation tool on tablet and use iso as source and use sdcard for files. Also was prompted for more space (4GB of 16GB left after Win8.1 updates/even after doing a disk clean after updates) and could also select sdcard as target for install. So now I can have the tablet on charge wh

So far at 32% install (Tweeted a Pic)

Still struggling to get my Proline (A933L) tablet to install (Upgrade Win10)

Edit: I 'loosly' followed this guide till I got it working

It will get faster. Since Win7 the Windows system learns and optimises startup over time.

Edit: It's faster and leaner than 7/8. Ars Technica just did a Win 10 comparison on older PCs.
There are relatively new computers.
Besides it is unfair to compare Win 8 with updates to the fresh new OS without updates. I see when comparing to fresh Windows 8 there is no improvement. Boot times - who cares about. I work about one week on average before rebooting.

I upgraded mine last night. It seemed to have added a few programs to startup, which I have since disabled including Skype. After than it appears to start up faster for me.

Gone back to windows 8.1

Using an upgraded version of windows (even been reset) is not an option for me. It's either a clean install or its nothing.

Microsoft and MSI need to pull finger so people with Oem product keys built into the bios isn't an issue.

Plenty of unhappy people online regarding this matter.

That's too bad. I assume the upgrade process is automated and is not the same as booting with the ISO. Therefore no choice for destination of install. What if you boot into Ubuntu live CD before the system restarts after preparing and try deleting your old Windows files?

I can boot with the ISO. I can do anything I want really it's just that the product id and the bios product key are not setup for windows 10.

I have tried everything (that all works for retail) but for oem it's a different story.

Hence the windows 8.1 install now. I'll keep an eye on the MSI threads and also the GT72 owners lounge thread.

My Lenovo has an oem key in bios, ran setup from the iso in windows 8.1 and it upgraded + activated with no drama to 10

I have a retail key so you're saying it should go easier.
