Windows 7 As Primary OS?

It works but my games still ask me to put the cd in :(

pooks does your clonEdrive disks say UDF?

I was just using it to install something off a .cue and .bin file.

I prefer to not use a virtual cd to run games and instead use other means. :)

It can be a certain build of Vista...? Do you have an original copy of Vista...?
Do you? or is yours a pirate copy like most MS fanboys?

Thing is Vista ran well on my older AMD machine it was when I upgraded that I realised how useless Vista really is.

what ram are you using? more than often it is faulty ram that can cause hanging etc. due to the fact that vista keeps more pre-loaded software in its ram, its more likely to pick up ram faults and freeze. try down something to run some memory checks.... could be that simple.

Yes it was ram, not faulty but just that Vista did not like my mobo ram combination. I say was because when I installed Vista on my new PC I would get a BSOD daily and only with Vista not Linux or XP which was proof to me of how unstable Vista really is, the problem was solved when asus issued a bios update(not that XP or linux needed one).

So I decided to get another mobo and this time go with ram that is on the QVL for the Mobo.. vista ran well no BSODs but I want to make use of AHCI even though vista does not support it out the box, if you try and install with AHCI enabled Vista just hangs but after installing in normal IDE mode you have to change a registry key which enables AHCI.

After enabling AHCI I see why it is not enabled by default(hence the problems I'm having) yet I won't switch to normal IDE mode because Linux works well with it.

So your saying it is basically your bios settings messing up vista, then why is it crap? By the sounds of it you know what is messing it up but choose to call it crap instead. Sounds like your settings are useless and not vista :).

What is the advantage of ahci over ide?

Yep... All legal... We have a volume licence agreement with Microsoft at our company, and IT personnel may use all Microsoft Software agreed upon. So I can use Windows Vista, Office 2007 Pro, Visual Studio 2008, etc. legally. :D

We also have a direct representative @ Microsoft. Fun working in IT for this company...

No, I ran the default settings.

This proves that Vista is useless because XP and Linux ran well with the same hardware, they can adapt to new hardware, Vista would BSOD easily on the same hardware, Asus had to figure out was was crashing Vista and they added more compatibility modes for other ram.

What is the advantage of ahci over ide?
it exposes SATA's advanced capabilities (such as hot-plugging and native command queuing)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Host_Controller_Interface
Also mentions the issues you find in Vista.

So from the sounds of it, your mobo was a bit dodgy to me. You cannot blame with for hardware problem but anyhoo all to their own guess.

That was my old mobo(p5kse and mushkin ram), I got a new one(P5Q with Corsair XMS2 ram) and now I have the problem with AHCI and Vista.

But to be honest... I'm happy that Vista gave me these problems or I would never had switched to Linux :D

Yea so asus had a problem, then vista does not like ahci, so basically vista as whole is not the problem :). never known people who want to run windows in ahci mode but anyhoo, yea well stick to linux if you like it hey :)

So basically you don't pay for it... like most MS fanboys. :)

The company pays for it... We get the software as part of the volume license agreement and our company policy.

Our corporate office is the volume license-holder, and basicly every Microsoft product is available under that license for us.

Asus never had a problem :p Vista has a problem. :)

The motherboard is an intel chipset so you might as well blame intel... while you're at it maybe my CPU was a problem too?. :D

Because Vista surely can't be a piece of crap.

Finally you understand what i am getting at :)

The thing with Vista and Win7 is, that it will give you crap if your machine is slow. That is why alot of people think Vista and Win7 is bad, as their machines can't handle it. When using at least 1GB of RAM, Vista will perform not too bad, but anything more than 1GB will make Vista / Win7 work like a dream... That is one way to improve your Vista / Win7 experience positively...
/me/ wonders if it will boot off the external tape drive on my Atari 800XL or Commadore...

And back to the topic :D

Windows 7 is great on even older machines, runs flawless now on my aged lappie: 1.8ghz Turion, 1gig of ram and 100gig hdd.
Still wondering if the 64kb RAM on my Atari will handle it...
Guess the 32kb of the Commadore is a bit dodgy...

Vista is a piece of crap, I thought Vista was good but I was deluding myself, I have to restart it often because it is so bloody useless yet I score 5.9 with everything...

Win7 looks promising but there is no support if something does not work since it's a beta.
I thought the 32kb Commadore was good until Atari 800XL arrived with 64kb RAM, then came the Atari ST series, driving 5 MIDI keyboards of one interface at live gigs, then came the IBM XT with 640k RAM and "Turbo" button and MS DOS - major improvement.
Then there was my trusty ol' 586, followed by P1 with 32Mb RAM - WOW!
Ran Windows 3.1, upgraded to 64Mb with the arrival of Win95.
Got too sluggish, so had to move to PII with Win98 and 128Mb RAM.
MS kept improving so I took the plunge to 98SE, then skipped 2000, bit the bullet and installed XP, upgraded to SP2 which is still running on my studio rig, although a P4 with 2Gb RAM by now...
When I bought my latest notebook it came pre-installed with a castrated version (Home Premium) of Vista, so I installed Ultimate without any regrets so far and haven't found the need to restart for over 3 weeks now.
I'm still using XP SP3 and Ubuntu in VMWare, as some older software packages are not compatible with Vista - when will the upgrades or quest for 'better and faster' ever stop?

Maybe try and increase the PageFile settings if it might be of any good...
/me/ moving back to DOS and Win 3.1, where the autoexec.bat and config.sys can be tweaked for better performance... :D
