Windows 8: What can you expect?

Windows 8 - I am still trying to convince the good missus that Windows 7 is worth the spend  :D

I usually just lurk on these forums but i had to give my 2c on this whole 128bit joke...

1 blog post isn't a damn reference, also processor roadmaps for 2012 have been out for a while and there are no 128bit processor scheduled...

now just to put things in context:

64bit allows for (taking into account hardware limitations in address space) around 256 terabytes. I somehow don't see us breaking that limit in two years. Just think logically for a minute instead of just believing every silly news post you read. 128bit does offer quad precision floats but you can do that on current architectures, just like you could do double precision on 32bit architectures.

Where i assume the misunderstanding resulted from is web bloggers, forum posters and tech journalists who have no background in engineering/IT/computer science or even common sense, reading that bulldozer (the new AMD architecture) has 128bit FPUs and immediately assuming that means its a 128bit processor. What that means is that it can process two 64bit values simultaneously or 4 32bit values, it doesn't mean its a 128bit processor, technically it's still a 64bit processor as the address bus is still 64bits wide! Oh but wait it has 2 FPUs so OMGBBQHAX, if we add the numbers together we get 256biy SO WAIT FOR IT: its a 256bit processor, bring on IA-256, windows 34 and so on...

The 128bit fpu is a requirement for SSE5:

"SSE5 instructions typically operate on 128-bits of data at a time, as do previously released SSE instruction sets. These new instructions aim to increase work per instruction and remove additional overhead for storing and reloading of register operands through the introduction of an additional operand."

128bit data and a 128bit memory address bus are not the same thing, i just wish people online would use their common sense instead of reading a number and assuming something...

I'm pretty sure half the journalists "breaking" this "story" couldn't explain the difference between a memory bus and an FPU... sigh...

here's a reputable article on bulldozer (notice how not once do they refer to it being a 128bit processor) - http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=3674&cp=7

Personally I expect a large price.

EDIT: Also I can't wait until standard drives hit 2TB and beyond and that MBR limitation of 2TB starts to become apparent.

Calling me Bill Gates is something I would take as a compliment. He has done a lot more than anyone else for modern computing as we know it today. The mistakes he made? If you are not making mistakes then you are clearly not working.

Ah but still, this is a reference to one specific dumb ass comment he made.
I dont compare you to the great things he's done, I'd come straight up and tell you that ;)

As I have said before Microsoft are totaly a big fraud. They never finish anything or backup thier faults, Just jam the next software down your thoat for more income. They have no shame in doing people in for self financial gain.

yeah, I'll agree - go for a Mac man!

you don't know much about Windows, unfortunately...

TROLL ALERT!! (I wish forums involved sounds so that I could put an air-raid siren in here)
