Windows 9

I love 8.1 and the start page. Took me 2 weeks to get used to it. Everything is so convenient. You type what you want and its there. Instantly. And I only got a HP Pavilion i3 and it feels like a monster.

Everything is so fast. I love it.

The typing thing has been there since 7, I use it all the time. Might even be since Vista but never used it.

What is hard-core about it?
I don't see the need to spend money on a new operating system when my current one works perfectly.
But since you are stuck on Windows 7 you are welcome to test it and give a review.

Ok, so you are not going to upgrade to Windows 9 in the New Year.

Oh, look five posts up, you'll see a screenshot of my desktop. ;)

Personally Windows 8.1 was Microsoft's way of saying sorry, Windows 8.1 still feels like a dual OS running on one machine. That's what Windows 9 is supposed to fix. Let's hope so.

Apparently it will come with a significant visual change. I'll download it the moment it lands.

Probably booted into win7 no more than 5 times this year. I've been doing some HDD cleanup recently and I'm probably gonna start my deskto pc from scratch with 8.1 & Linux (what I use 99.9%) tjis week some time.

Are there any tools to strip, lean out & speed up win8?

Yes, the 8.1 update. :)

Install Windows 8, and straight after that, click on the Store and you should get the Windows 8.1 update.

However, when you click on the Windows 8.1 Update, it will tell you that you need to install all Windows 8 updates first. That's a lie.

You only need to install one update, KB2871389, which is 12MB, and the Store will start downloading 8.1 for you.

That's it! Enjoy. ;)

I don't think that I need to. Windows 8 does everything I want and it is very efficient at getting tasks done. I'm sure Windows 9 will have lots of new features but I'll wait until a later stage to upgrade.
I noticed you are also quite happy with Win 8. :)

Nah it's still bloated, there must be tools to strip it down, something like the old nLite for example.

It is surprisingly lite and superfast once the prefetching kicks in.

I would say it's even faster than Ubuntu 14.04, as it uses flat menus that are optimized for a low spec (read tablet) machine.

It requires about 20GB of hdd space, that means there must be a lot of stuff in there most people will never need.

A Windows 8 installation is a full copy of Windows 8 Pro with Media Centre, but the Pro & Media Centre bits only get unlocked when you enter licence keys.

When I entered my Pro and Media licence keys, Windows 8 did not prompt me to insert the disk again.

I would be hesitant to try and remove stuff from the installation.

Downloaded all windows 8 updates before it installed 8.1.

Ouch! Yeah, I think the first lot of updates clocks in at close to 1GB.

Well, now you know & won't have to download 1GB of updates again. ;)

Nuhi, the dude who made nlite and vlite announced last year that he is working a new tool for Windows 8/8.1. Still no sign of it.

Official tool is Windows Embedded, Image Configuration Editor combined with Image Builder Wizard.

All this talk of getting rid of windows bloat reminds me of TinyXP. Loved that version of Xp. Someone needs to make a windows 8 version.

Forgot to come back to this thread and add my own thoughts:

Personally I plan to run it in a VM for a little but shortly after set it up as a dual boot.

Windows 8 and 8.1 are much like vista and ME. They were just stepping stones. Not saying windows 9 will be the amazing most ultimate OS out there but we can certainly hope it comes close.

Ive been using all the os betas since windows 7. Im keen to try out the next iteration!

Windows 9 definitely wont be on my work machines though... well not as a main OS anyway...

Some info on the rumoured feature list
