I had a power failure recently and now get the error "Windows explorer stopped working" before anything loads up on my PC. No desktop/start menu etc.

I have a guest account which works fine.

Rebooted into main account in safe mode (Still received error but was able to convert guest account to admin and can now access all files but main account still dying)

Think hard drive is damaged as get an error during boot stating S.M.A.R.T. HD bad backup and replace, or something similar.

Any ideas, posting this before running a scan disk.

Thanks for the assist.

Control+Alt+Delete. Start task manager. Go to processes tab. Look for any explorer.exe and end process. Then go to File> new task (run) and type in explorer, press Ok and see if the explorer (desktop) starts.

Does not sound good ... could be that the drive did get a bad knock from that power failure ... best to make backups asap, before anything else. :(

...which I've learnt normally means creating a new one and copying your files into it - there are a couple of methods at restoration but (like Windows upgrades) I don't trust the half-half way of doing things...rather start clean and know you're on (relatively) stable footing ;)

Thanks guys, I guess its time for a new HD - although this ones only 2 years old. Need a new gpu anyway so I'll kill 2 birds with one stone
