Hi all,

I am running a Windows Server 2008 VM, with the aim of testing WSUS from within a VM environment.

I am however struggling to get WSUS to install, one of the prerequisites is SQL Server (2005?) which I cannot get to install on my VM.

Some details of the environment:

VMware Workstation 6
Host OS = Windows Vista x64
Guest OS = Windows Server 2008 Standard x64

Can someone please help me here. I have found so many noob guides on Google on how to install WSUS but all of them assume that MS SQL server is already installed and running.

Someone told me that running SQL server in VM mode is problematic and cannot be done. I do not believe that (yet)...

Cheers Rudi

What is preventing you from installing SQL, error message etc? Are you installing Xpress or standard?

Running SQL in a Virtual Environment CAN be problematic, which has led to the perception that it IS problematic. The reason why it can cause problems is because the IO/ second when using a vdisk is lower than when compared to using a physical disk. In a case where shared storage is used, or the IO demands are low, as in your case, then a virtualised SQL instance should be fine.

Guys, firstly my apologies if this is the wrong place to ask this question, although I appreciate that some meaningful suggestions came from NoCause & Conradl.

I am definitely sure its the x64 version of SQL 2005, there are infact 2 versions available for x64, those being the x64 version and the iA64. I first tried the x64 (as my hardware is more in line with that) but after failure I also downloaded the second version, and it actually informed me that it is not the right version for my version of Server 2008.

It is the standard version of SQL server SP1

The error message I am getting is "This machine does not have a product that matches this installation package"

The file is KB913090, which I got the link off the relevant TechNet page describing the prerequisites for installing WSUS.

Perhaps an idea is to try the express version of SQL 2005 instead, leading on from NoCauses' suggestion.

Any other possible causes?

Cheers R

It looks to me like you do not have the installation files for SQL, but rather the installation for SP1 for SQL. You will not be the first person to make the mistake of thinking that an MS CD labeled "MS Server Standard Edition SP1", is actually an OS AND a service pack.....

Do you have a SQL license? And a SQL disk?

OK heres an update to the post.

I managed to get SQL server 2005 Express Edition installed, and WSUS SP1 is now working.

I have selected updates for Office 2007 and Windows 7 to be pulled from MS for deployment. I am however struggling to decide which updates to select, as many updates for Office 2007 are/were superceded and I do not want to waste cap downloading unnecessary updates.

Plus WSUS sees my Windows 7 PC's as Vista OS's?? Is it early days to expect WSUS to work with W7?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Rudi

Enable automatic approvals...
If you've selected W7 under products and classifications then W7 PCs will get the right updates.
